Does anyone know where I can get either a factory reverse camera (not the MOST type) or know which aftermarket camera fits in the space provided in the tailgate handle of the D4? I've seen a million cheap eBay cameras that replace one of the number plate lights, but I want mine to look factory..

Cheers Rob.

Some guys just purchase a new Land Rover D4 rear hatch handle assembly and replace the old one with it.

Note that there are apparently two part numbers of rear camera handle. One is for the system that also has the sensors in the side exterior mirrors and the other part number is the simpler system where there is just the rear backup camera. I presume that is the one you will want as the cameras are somehow different and the complex setup camera only works with the side sensor system.

Yes that sounds right bbyer.. I think the complex system is the one hooked up by the fiber optic loop.

Hi Rob,

I looked into this when my D4 was new, and the person to contact is "Wiggs" on D3.co.uk. Last time I checked with him (June 2010) the non-surround version was just under $AUD200 landed. In comparison to this, the local RRP from a LR dealer is close to $AUD500.

I have an aftermarket "number plate light replacement" one from eBay and the only thing 2 things I don't like are:

The new hole/lens for the light to shine through is significantly dimmer and is not as symetrical when it shines on the number plate.
I can't see the edge of the bumper in the camera - it is off by around 2 cm

I am going to remount the original bumper bar lens, and cut the black plastic from the sides of aftermarket version and mount it on the blanking plate where the factory camera would sit, which is a couple of cm closer to the centre of the car, and a couple of cm further back. All that needs to be done is a small hole drilled into the blanking plate for the wire to go through, and some adhesive. If it all goes wrong I guess it is only $20 for a new camera (and $200 for a new blanking plate. :P).

Because the whole assembly sits underneath the tailgate handle it is very hard to see the camera in the first place, and looks virtually identical to a factory mount - no little metal plates/brackets or hanging off bits. Attached are 2 photos - one from "level" height, and one from way down below.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Cheers,
Edwin.

Just a minor correction, the forum site to which eddomak is referring is: Disco3.co.uk .

I don't know if he still has them, but I bought my D4 handle with reversing camera from Slimer on that site.

Hi Learner
What system do you use to connect the camera to the original screen or are you running it to a aftermarket / additional screen?
I have asked my LR dealer if I can patch into the standard screen but they have no idea.
I have the full colour screen without camera's back or front sensors.
I don't want to run an additional screen if I don't have to and had not thought of replacing the whole handle as you have done, a nice piece of lateral thinks.

Cheers

Thanks eddomak,

I had a look at the handle & removed the blanking plate. I think I'll be doing the same as you, already have the camera to suit.

Hi Guys,
I too tried the tail light camera, it worked but didn't give me vision of my tow ball.
I bought a camera from Frankies Auto Electrics in South Nowra NSW for $90 which is gloss black and has a cable running through the centre of a threaded shaft which is used to mount the camera.
I took the blank plate out drilled a 1/4 inch hole in it for the threaded shaft to go through, then used a pc of flat aluminium Approx 10mm wide x 40mm long drilled a 1/4 inch hole in it.
Fitted camera threaded shaft through the plastic blank plate(which was clipped back into the handle) then thru the aluminium plate which is fitted on the inside of the handle, then fitting the nut clamped it all together, the camera when fitted has a different viewing angle so I can see the tow ball and looks like a factory one.
If anyone is interested I can take a photo and find the part # of the camera, still have the tail light camera if anyone wants it!

Hi mikel,
I have an S spec D3, therefore no LR screens.

Those that do, I believe, connect the rear camera to the LR screen through a GVIF (Gigabit Video InterFace). This is widely discussed on the Disco3.co.uk site.

Best Wishes,

Hi,

Photo's of my reverse camera. I use the monitor for the rear camera on my caravan as well. It has a switch on the monitor to flick between the two cameras.

Cheers,
Talby

Can anyone suggest off hand why LR wouldn't be able to retrofit the factory reverse camera to a 2010 TDV6 with the satnav screen?
My wife was repeatedly assured by the sales rep that this was possible when we signed up for the car, but now the service dept is saying $1200 for a third party non-genuine install, possibly not even to the inbuilt screen (TBC).
Thanks

I'd be inclined to drag the sales-guy over to the service department and have it out face to face ... you may still not get what you want but at least you'll get the pleasure of seeing the sales-guy squirm - and it may catch the eye of somebody "senior" and you may get some sort of action ... worth a try.
Sales people will say anything to get a sale, make him/or her take responsibility for their "assurances" !!!!
cheers

Hi Stuart,

I'd do some more research if I were you & if you're handy be prepared to fit some yourself if you wish to save some $$$. There are options available, I've only just finished installing a touch screen unit into my non touch screen D4.

Cheers Rob

Thanks Rob - sounds great what you've done... If only I were handy, as you say!

What I don't get is that from reading what folks here are doing, once you've got a $30 to $120 camera off eBay, done a bit of wire routing and splicing, you either use your own screen or alter a Config File (using a faultmate or something?) to enable the built in touch screen.
It's beyond my skills, but how's it a $1200 job for professionals, factory gear or otherwise?

Stuart if your car is a D4 and has a factory screen it can be done, I have my own faultmate and that on it's own will cost you $1200ish (can't remember but it wasn't cheap) The crowd that make the faultmate are on the verge of modifying it so you can buy a cheap wireless type device that can bought or borrowed and the modifications can be done over the net at a pay per service type of deal. The cabling and connection for the camera is a no brainer for a good auto elec if you give him the right information. The information you need to install the cabling and remove the screen and hard drive are all on the disco3 site.

The other alternative is to get onto HIDS4u and buy thier GIF interface unit this will do all you want, and more, and does not need to be turned on in the CCF. I believe it also comes with a good set of instructions that you can give to a decent autoelec so he can fit for you. The result would be that the reverse camera would come on the touch screen when reverse is selected as well as other video souces being able to be fed in as you please. I doubt the unit purchase and install would cost more that $1000 but have not looked into it.

On my last trip back to UK I picked up one of these: Trailair ยป Trailair for Discovery (http://www.landrovertrailair.co.uk/products-2/products/trailair-by-land-rover-for-discovery-3-4-%E2%80%93-pn-39-015/)

A very neat bit of kit that installs a tow-ball camera (albeit offset because of the location of the camera in the door handle) as well as tyre pressure monitoring for both the car & a trailer. It is a DIY install but involves lots of trim removal & some basic wiring so I had mine but in by a good autoelectrician. The supplier was trying to establish a distribution network in Australia when I bought it and are very good at answering enquiries. There was a discount associated with the disco3.co.uk forum when I purchased.
