View Full Version : Disco 3 TDV6 transmission hydraulic noise

Folks,

I have a 2007 D3 TDV6 with about 140,000 on it. For about 6 months now the transmission has this , what I describe as a hydraulic pump type of noise.

Have had it to Australs several times, no problem found each time. Grrr Eventually they did a trans service, flush and new oil. No different. Noise still there.

Also there is what I can only describe as some sort of "resonace" type of noise around 50 - 60 kmh. I am thinking it is some sodrt of diff or tailshaft problem.

Any thoughts?
Cheers
Peter

just an update on this problem. Car is at the stealer at present and they have identified the high pressure fuel pump as the culprit.

No idea if this is correct but happy to go along with it and see if it cures the problem. Lease company pays for maintenace.

sure hope it does fix it ;)

fuel pump did not cure the "noise" Did not think it would but hey lease company paid for it anyway.

Trans has had the $1500 service, filter and pan done. did not cure it either.

Noise is still there. I'm hoping it is not a ongoing major issue. Time will tell.

Have same model same mileage same problem cured yesterday by wheel balance! I had presumed major a drivetrain problem:)

it has just had new tyres, wheel align and balance ....

noise still there. It is there when car sits still too so not a wheel balance issue

Just wondering if you had an answer to this noise? Mine has just started making a noise that sounds a bit like a toothed belt noise, but seemed to come up at the same time as some transmission faults. Noise is directly proportanal to engine speed for me

Alternator is a big suspect there with the whining sound and trans faults etc Shane. How many km?

Peter I'd be thinking about checking either torque converter alternator or even a/c compressor clutch bearing....

i've had exact symptoms turn up here Shane. The whining is almost a whirring sound and the kicker was the smell of hot plastic/ overheating windings when the bonnet was opened...:o

just been looking over mine this morning, waiting for the trans oil temp to raise for a proper level check, horrible ratting/grinding sound around the torque converter area while idling

Well, about 2L of oil to much in the trans. Still faulting on the gear changes. Whine I thought had gone, but once the oil hit 59 deg it returned. When in park and the engine is reved I can here it, with the use of a screwdriver to listen, no noise from the alternator, however I can here the whine from the back of the engine and at the front of the trans. Im not feeling very hopeful of the trans being ok

When I had the transmission oil changed a few months ago, the auto trans place here (Sunshine Coast QLD) advised me that they now have kits available from ZF to refurbish the transmission, I think the cost was around 3.5K complete, so if that's what needs doing then this is a lot cheaper than a complete new box.

I had a chat to zf over the phone. Rebuild cost in Sydney was $4250.

That there is, and they send the boxes to Sydney for rebuilds as they apparently don't have the time to do them. Looking like I'm going to have to get the D3 down to perth for it either way

I have seen that. Not sure how a D4 2010/11 box would go in my old 05 D3. I'm sure there's something that would make the swap hard (anyone care to comment?)

If you're going to do that you will need to use your valve body/ mechatronics unit and then reset adaptive values once it is in.

That's what was required when my L322 tranny was replaced. The new used box even had the exact same spec number.

Well for me my disco got sent to perth, trans removed and stripped for a rebuild. Once stripped they found burnt out clutch packs and all sorts of other damage. Trans then got sent to zf in Sydney to rebuild as apparently they can bench test it so they don't have to find out the hard way reinstalling it into the disco. ZF rebuilt it and found the mechatronic unit is also stuffed so last I heard they where waiting for one to come from Germany. That was 2-3 weeks ago and I haven't heard any more. No idea how much longer till I see my disco again

Sounds bad , thanks 4 update as mine is starting to make a growling noise at around 80kmh on acceleration . been doing it for a while now also did t a total fluid change and a new metal sump (supplied by ZF fitted) about 18 moths ago.
I will keep my fingers crossed , if it gets worse i will take it down to (Transmissions r us) in Balcatta and get Cameren to check it out .
