Ford Falcon ID numbers?

Hi all, can anyone send me to a link for info on Falcon / Fairmont ID numbers, IE if I was looking at a V8 XY, how can I check to see if paint, engine, trans, trim etc is original or what?

Thanks!! I am looking at a nice hopefully original 302 XY Fairmont Wagon next weekend on behalf of a friend of mine, need to get some info to see if it is original paint, engine, trans etc etc.
