Autoglym high definition cleaner, autoglym super resin polish and finish with autoglym high definition wax. Comes up a treat.

I use the Autoglym resin polish too.
The ONLY stuff I use for removing bush pin striping and road tar.

I find autoglym easier on and off. Great finish to. Maguires clay bar and quick detail is the go if the car hasn't been polished for a while. Quick detailer is great in the door jams and hard to polish bits. Cheers Matt

California Custom .
I started using there range of products after i caught my mate using these on his Show car. M-Ron Glass can be used in the sun and i think they say somewhere to let it sit in the sun for 20 mins before wiping off.

The stuff I put on my 99MY Td5 about a year ago was called Du-Cote Liquid Protectant (http://www.erps.com.au/du-cote-liquid-protectant.html) and it seems to be holding a higher level of shine than any other polish I've used in 15 years of owning vehicles.
And in the past year it has spent 9 days every fortnight on Fraser Island covered in salt laden air while under a carport.
IIRC it was about $25 for the bottle. When I applied it a year ago I think I used about a third of the bottle, maybe a quarter. It went on pretty easily - no hard buffing to get it off either. The next time I apply it I think I'll get one of the car polishers from Super Cheap Auto or similar and taking it off with a machine like that would really assist in getting a great shine out this stuff (or any polish most likely).

The WORST thing I did for my D1 paint job was try to polish it. Within weeks of doing the bonnet the clear coat gave up. I forget what I used. No more polish for me. :D

Most of the advanced products are called polish or wax, but they are actually a paint sealant.
To do the job properly, you need to:
Wash the car (with two buckets - one for the car wash detergent, one to rinse out the cloth / sponge before using more wash). Don't use a wash and wax product for this wash.
Then use a paint cleaner and/ or clay bar (Meguiar's have some good product here) to get rid of any paint contaminants. When you can run your hand over the paint and not feel any little bits of grit / dirt on the paint, then it is clean. Your hand should freely slide over the paint.
If any areas need a bit of work (scratches in the clear coat) or embedded dirt use a product like Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. What ever you do, do not use an old fashioned cutting compound (even a light one) on clear coat, like you would on a car with no clear coat.
Then use the sealant. Meguiar's Ultimate wax is actually a sealant, so is Nufinish once a year, AutoGlym and lots of other products.

oh you're joking! What was used on it? I don't care if its polish, or wax or whatever, I just want something to use to look after the paint the best I can for the longest I can

I can't add any amazing new products to the list that's already here but in terms of paintwork surviving the Isa....keep it under cover as much as possible, hose it off fully before washing so you're not scratching the dust into the paintwork as you wash, seal the paint regularly with one of the 'sealer' products mentioned above, dry it off with a squeegee or chamois to avoid water spots all over it (IIRC the water out there was quite hard. Or was it soft? Either way, it has high levels of dissolved minerals that will precipitate out onto your paintwork as the water dries if you just leave it).
The D2 would be a great vehicle for the NW of Qld - good fuel range, high comfort levels, and parts will reach you fairly quickly via Townsville or Brisbane when the need arises. Dunno if there's a dealer out there nowadays.

yep your right on all accounts ! and its is so comfortable to drive the distances , and no there are no dealerships here anymore closest is Townsville (which the disco does even use a full tank to get to 900km away!:D:twisted:).
I think its going to be nu finish this weekend then !

That Du-Cote stuff I mentioned earlier in the thread is worth a try too. There might be someone in Townsville that stocks it? IIRC the outfit of stores that call themselves Opposite Lock were retailers for it but it needed to be ordered in. Or you could/used to be able to get it from ERPS directly.
Have you posted a photo in the welcome thread?
