1994 LAND ROVER DEFENDER | BROKEN DASHBOARD UNIT

Afternoon Folks,

New to the AULRO and this is my first post. Been away in AfRiCA for a couple of years and just got back.

Trying to fix up my old(ish) girl, a 1994 Defender, who's been gathering dust and spiders whilst i've been away. The main issue i have relates specifically to the dashboard unit that houses the SPEEDOMETER and the SPEEDOMETER itself. Basically, the unit housing is cracked and i think it needs to either be replaced. If anyone's got any ideas on where i might be able to find a replacement or, if anyone's got any ideas on how i can hold it together:

49250

Secondly, the SPEEDOMETER needle can't hold a speed and dances between numbers and the KILOMETER GAUGE doesn't tick over anymore. Is this something that can be replaced or fixed, and if it can, where could i look and who could do it:

49251

Had a similar problem with mine. Fixing lugs, plastic extension things that stick out and get screwed down were broken off. I just stuck them back on with Super Glue and a bit of Epoxy reinforcement and CAREFULLY screwed it all back together.

Or try there

Land Rover County/Defender Dash Fascia Panel-Genuine | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Land-Rover-County-Defender-Dash-Fascia-Panel-Genuine-/220922195767?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item336ffd2f37)

As for the speedo, check and see if its not the cable or misaligned where the cable joins the gearbox (very easy to do). My speedo was faulty as well, fortunately a mate swapped me one for a slab. :D:D

This might be what you're after:

Defender & S111 Binnacle Mount (http://www.raptor-engineering.co.uk/defender-s111-binnacle-mount)

I changed my dash fascia a few months ago not a bad job other than not a lot of room to play with but all done in a couple of hours, just use tape to mark every wire and where it came from simple.

I have the Raptor binnacle repair mount: good piece of kit, and actually exposes how ****-poor the original is and how cheap it would have been to actually engineer a proper solution.

Just been through this process myself. New fascias are available on ebay ($150 from memory...). I also used the Raptor steel mounting setup which is a lot stronger.

I've got Howard Instruments putting together an Electronic speedo / sensor / wiring for me. Been through two cable speedos in a month. Aside from the wavy needle, one was also about 10km/h out

Amazing how many rattles and vibrations renewing the dash structure gets rid of.

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the advice. Apologies for not having posted again sooner but i got sent away on assignment.

I've ended up ordered the BINNACLE MOUNT from RAPTOR ENGINEERING as it looks like the best long term solution.

Checked the SPEEDOMETER again and all the cables, took it out and cleaned it all up and put it back and it looks fine but nothing has changed. If anyone's got any ideas on a replacement part?

Thanks heaps again for all you advice.

Have you tried spraying silicone spray down the cable and take out all the sharp bends in the cable if possible.
Mine has improved after doing this, still a bit jinky. But better.
Where did you get your raptor dash and binnacle from.
Cheers
