Grease nipples and alternator brushes...

Anyone know what size/thread size the grease nipples on the propshaft are?

Also I've been looking through parts websites and no one lists alternator brushes - are they just a standard part you can pick up from Supercheap/Repco?

And as an aside why are grease nipples either the best thing since sliced bread or a grease spreading nightmare? There must be a better fitting that makes grease injection a less hit or miss affair.:confused:
Rear propshaft was easy as, front - I got grease everywhere except in the grease fitting, regardless of how well the fitting seemed to be on the nipple. And yep I did check the balls in the fittings were free prior to squirting...

Just incase anyone's interested it looks like the nipple is 1/8" BSP. Part no 234532

Nipple size on my front prop was 1/4 UNF but both readily available.

Did you try the technique of putting a clean cloth over the nipple before applying the gun? This often works on reluctant nipples.

The alternative of course is to strip the component, or poke a bit of wire down the drillings to remove the hard grease.

I agree - greasing is the worst service job :)

I think you will find several different threads on the grease nipple, depending when the propshaft was made (they were pretty much unchanged for decades - and the ones you have are likely to be not the originals). I have a box of assorted grease nipples!

As far as alternator brushes go, since alternators were not fitted to 2/2a Landrovers, it is anyone's guess what alternator you have. However, if you can get a brush out and go to any auto electrician or probably most Repco etc, you should be able to get them. If you are talking about Generator brushes, get the model number off the generator, and try any auto electrician - may have to find one that has been in business since before alternators replaced generators!
