Hi All,

I was thinking yesterday about if i got stuck in the middle of know where and i have some ATF handy how the hell would i fill the trans if i sprung a leak or popped a cooler hose etc.

I have a few ideas but im interested to know your thoughts.

My thoughts are it would need to be a piece of hose connected to the filler plug. It would be more of an emergency thing rather than a permanent install. You could have it rolled up and stored till its needed. The actual level setting would require its removal or i could have a little bung that could be removed to allow oil to flow out rather than removing the complete hose. If no oil comes out replace the bung and keep filling.

I'm sure alot of you have stories about popping cooler lines off and using some sort of bush mechanics to get you going again. I hope this could save me the trouble.

Cheers
Rhys

convert to an oil pan and dipstick from a p38a rangerover, the stick comes up passenger rear of the engine, misses the starter and other bits and pieces that way.

JC that is a good permanent option but im also trying to consider if you don't have the option to do that or the cost of doing it etc.

If i was to make something it would most likely adapt to other transmission like ZF5HP & ZF6HP transmission. Could also adapt to the GM 5L40E is required.

I use a length of clear plastic hose about half inch diam or maybe 5/8th in the driveway. You can easily run it up into the engine bay and put a funnel in the end. The ATF flows fast so when it is nearly full I just add a little at a time and the excess which spilles out is really very little. A plastic bung might work ok but you might also end up with ATF upto your armpits. When not used I join the 2 ends of the hose together to form a loop with a poly irrigation hose joiner to keep it clean and stop it dripping oil.
If you are making up a survival kit maybe be sure the hose diameter allows you to use it as a replacement section for blown heater hoses as well?

I've wondered about adapting one of these
Drainplug 4x4 Store (http://shop.difflock.com/-c-4.html?osCsid=1cf1a64a142ae530798109f4f657c466) to my non-dipstick ZFhp24 box in the P38... far easier to do the refill beside the vehicle than laying underneath 2.2 tonne of LR engineering while "someone" runs through the gears with the engine running:eek:

I've put this post up previously, but this is how I fill up the auto. I used Penrite SIN last time, which has a pull out pipe, but others have similar. (If not, then drill a hole in an old lid to very snugly fit some plastic hose). If you have an old lid with the pull out pipe, remove the pull out pipe. Also, drill a small hole into the oil lid, one that will allow a ball inflator to go in. (About 2 mm drill bit or so, IIRC). With the big hole, put in some plastic hose that will go to the bottom of the bottle. I have a length of about 500mm to 800mm of 10mm hose in total, so the container is a reasonable distance from the filling area.

When you want to add fluid, put the lid and hose into the ATF bottle. Hook up the compressor to the ball inflator. Put the hose into the transmission and turn on the compressor - air in, fluid flows out and into the transmission. You can see when it gets to the transmission. When it flows out, as per the workshop manual, pull out the ball inflator. No air, no fluid flow.

Very simple with no pump required. Creates very little mess at all. I imagine the only thing that people may not have is a ball inflator - other items would be standard fare for a 4WD owner, or doing this work anyway.

Just carry an oil pump, they're not all that significant or buy/put the ATF in a bottle that has a spout already.

Great idea's i might try and make something that connects easily to a bottle top by cutting a hole into it. Problem would be if you had left overs you need to cover it with a rubber glove then fit the cap.
