I am picking up a 12-month old D4 from a private seller interstate this Friday.

I had a vehicle-savvy mate go over the car and condition checked out. Just wondering if anyone has any advice about specific things to check for before exchanging?

Obviously the standard things, VIN matches, PPSR check etc. But what paperwork/books should be present with a LR? Is it possible to physically determine that the ediff is installed? Oh and where do I find the VIN on a D4

Don't want to count my chickens, but looking forward to being a D4 owner very soon :)

p.s I am pretty familiar with MY12 specs, what were the changes from a MY11?

In fact he wasn't asked to check for the ediff hence he didn't. False assumptions are the mother of all stupidity - you've managed to highlight yours without actually making a contribution, well done. The question still stands.

My D4 has the vin in the service menu on the dash....the same spot you check the oil level.

I would think you would need to switch the terrain response to rock craw and low range, then put the touch screen into 4x4 mode, and the diff will go from green to red for rear and centre diff lock.

I am assuming that it looks the same as my D4 built in sept 2011.

Well most vehicle savvy persons, would know what ,which and where to check for each particular model/make, otherwise he is not in fact "Vehicle savvy ". Dont suppose he was asked to check the Trans/convertor , or front/rear suspension bushes , or if even the VIN number matches , seeing you cant find that either !!!! a fool and his money are easily parted !

If you go to the Topix site and put in vin number it will tell you how it left the factory, including e diff, seat color, sound system the lot :cool:
Vin also on passenger side thru the windscreen

An e-diff has what looks like a very small starter motor mounted transversely on top of the rear diff, visible over the top of the wheels particularly if the vehicle is at off-road height.

I'm going in!

Very handy info.

They have my interior colour wrong.

So I assume ....LESS means I don't have that particular feature.

Shows my ediff

Is it just the 3.0s that have that display? The 2.7s just have an old fashioned dipstick... But I've never looked for the VIN!

Niobe, there really shouldnt be too many worries, maybe check the suspension raises in good time, the power steering doesn't feel gritty, no harshness in the driveline at speed... I can't think of any other bugs they can have at 12 mo...

Good luck and let us know how you go!

..... The question still stands.

The photo shows an e-diff. If looking over the rear wheels as Greame says, you would see the silver housing looking from the left rear wheel, the cylindrical starter motor looking thing(you can see it at the top attached to the silver part) would be seen looking over the right rear wheel. Make sure the car is set to off road height. You may also need to articulate the wheels to get more clearance for better visibility.

Make sure it still has the mis fueling reset tool. It's a yellow pronged thing that should live in the glovebox, oh and you'll want the ipod cable too possibly?

Hmm, no record of this VIN on Topix, but it matches the rego. Will have to check that in person.

Thanks to all the helpful responses.

Hmm, no record of this VIN on Topix, but it matches the rego.

Well, this is a problem.

The VIN has an 'AA' before the serial indicating MY10, but this is a MY11 car.
If I do a search for the VIN with 'BA', I get a perfect match for the colours and options.

So this is implying the car should be stamped with BA, and that the VIN on the rego is wrong.

The last 5 new cars I have bought all had the VIN displayed on a plate at the base of the windscreen on the passengers side.....

As does the D4.

With a complete lack of self control I cannot help decending to depths of other and say something like.

"Unless you are pretty car savy, and you know how to lift up a windscreen wiper you wont be able to locate it....."

I suggest that you don't hand over any money until this is sorted-out.
