Does any one use a RAM laptop mount fitted in their Puma? I have a Toughbook CF-29 and as it is getting old I am going to replace it with a newer model, the CF-31. Now RAM mount do a docking station which will work with both of the toughbooks so it means that the CF-29 can still be used as a sole diagnostic laptop for my IDS/VCM and MSV2 systems. The thing is.... at US$520 for the docking station and another $150 for the actual mount, is it worth it and does it take up a lot of space in the cab? Anybody have one fitted in their Puma? If so can I see some pics of your install? If anyone has used the ram mounts for any laptop I would value any feedback and pictures of your installation if you would be so kind, thanks.

Hey Lorryman,
I use a RAM universal lap top mount for my iPad because it is in heavy duty protective case that makes it to big for the dedicated mount.
I have combined that with the RAM flex pole and foot.
It is good quality and very strong. Only one bad point is the flex pole vibrates a lot of road. I had to make an additional brace back to the passengers grab handle on the dash to secure it, but it is all good now.
$500 sounds a lot though, mine in total was only $120.00
Cheers

Hi Drover,
I agree the mount is expensive but it does allow port access and charging of the toughbook without loads of cables hanging about. The main issue is that the toughbook weighs in at a hefty 3.9 kilos so the dock and arm need to be strong enough to carry that weight off road. A couple of the guys on defender2.net have come up with their solutions so plenty of ideas for me to explore and you OZ boys seem to come up trumps with mods so keep them ideas coming. :BigThumb:

And a wee vid on the actual RAM dock which kinda explains the high price.

I suppose the PUMA dash gives some extra mounting options than the Tdi dash.
Most mounts I have seen are secured to the transmission tunnel with a flexible pole, though I have seen some versions for the Motion tablet that suction-cup to the windscreen.
I use a CF-18 Toughbook on my Tdi. For your budget you could easily get the CF-18 or the updated duo-core CF-19 for under $500. These smaller toughbooks have a flip screen, that's a touch screen; so you can flip the keyboard out of the way.
I sit the CF-18 on the centre cubby with the screen up, and run two velcro straps under the screen, but over the key board, to secure it to the lid. If I need to I can lift the screen and swivel it to face me, but while on the move it sits flat and has power & USB GPS connected.
For future developments, I'm wondering whether a a cheap lightweight tablet might be better, mounted on the passenger side dash with a light weight mount. The price of a mount for the heavier tablets/laptops is more than that of a new light weight tablet and mount.
