Hi, should all the warning lights come on when key is in postition 2? The lights I get are oil, battery, hill desent in green, seatbelt, parking brake, SRS and thats it. It has an ABS block and sensors on the wheels and I have checked the fuses, all ok. Anything else I can check?
Also I have resoldered the HDC switch on the gear stick and it still does not light when engaged but does on startup?
Its 98 1.8 hardback if that makes any differance.

You should be getting ABS, TC and hill decent in amber on start up as well. The ABS light should stay on until you start moving.
Does the green hill decent light come on when you turn on the hill decent?
I would be checking wiring going to the instrument cluster as it could of had wires cut to get rid of the lights.

The green hill decent does not come on when selected on the gear stick, I have resoldered the wires but still nothing. Is the instrument cluster easy to take apart to check wires and bulbs? Any idea where the wires would have been cut? I am thinking behind the steering wheel/under the cluster.

Well, I have taken the instrument cluster apart, and surprise surprise there are some bulbs missing!! ABS, TC, and HCD warning, I have tried a bulb in them and they stay on. I have read posts on here that say they can be an easyish fix, brake light switch, or more complicated looking for faulty wheel sensors etc. Obviously (sp) these systems are not working but the car still drives ok, is it safe to drive? Does it still have 4wd? not that I off road it as its mainly used as a runaround on tarmac and tows a small trailer now and again.

It is safe to drive, it does not have ABS, so the wheel will lock up under hard braking.
Yes it will still have 4WD but the the TC and Hill decent wont work.
You said you repaired wiring to the hill decent switch, this will bring on these lights, so you may just need the faults cleared. Get them read at the same time as there may be more faults in the system.

Thanks woko for your help, do I need a dealer to get the faults cleared and will I need to replace the bulbs first?

Yes replace bulbs first.
You dont have to go to a dealer, just need to find someone with a hawkeye or similar that will talk with freelanders.
If you are going to keep this car it is worth getting a hawkeye. I paid just over $500 delivered for mine but I got the upgrade cable, 240v adapter and grey cable. You wont need the grey cable for yours as it is only needed for 2001 onwards freelanders
