can i use a repco thermostat in my 300tdi it looks slightly shorter than the original.was having trouble with 110 defender heating up ok then when i was just slow crawling the temp would drop right out again its cold here in tassie and would love to have a car with a heater that actually blows hot air instead of luke warm any other heating ideas welcome cheers dave:cool:

my mechanic mistakenly put in a short one that was labeled 'stant' and supposedly suitable for the 300TDI. He didn't notice the difference, but the engine did, and blew the head gasket. Don't do it. It's been said here often...Fit genuine t'stat.

Here's two thermostats, both look pretty much the same.The one on the left is a 300 Tdi thermostat the one on the right isn't.

When you look at the other side of the thermostat you can see that there is a significant difference.

Again, the thermostat on the left is the 300 Tdi thermostat.
The difference here is that the 300 Tdi thermostat is a bypass thermostat the other one is not.
A non bypass thermostat will physically fit in place of a bypass thermostat because it's shorter but will NOT do the same job. They are NOT interchangeable.
Destruction, tears and expense is often the result when this happens.:(
