Hi all , my 2008 Puma has developed a rattle in the last few weeks with noticable white smoke on medium to hard acceleration mainly when warmer the rattle comes on in lower revs ( 1500 - 2000) and sounds like a a few ball bearings in a steel pipe. This started happening after changing oil ( went to nulon oil with correct rating for cars with DPF) which was a bad choice ( as I worked out I have no DPF but a cat converter )

Q. Is the oil change to blame ?
Q. Any other explanations ?

I can change oil back to a recommended brand and spec ( suggestions of readily avail Oil welcome ) or ultimately send to mechanic if this is not the fix , but would like to hear some ideas of potential issue before handing over . I hope it's not an expensive fix!

Thanks in advance

The sound you describe to me sounds more like a pinging or fuel issue, though it seems strange that it occurred after an oil change and when the engine is hot..? I ran mobil 1 in my 08 puma from new and sold it at 150,000km with no issues...but did have that sound of ball bearings at times when I picked up dirty fuel out west, got the noise, power dropped slightly, check engine light came on then went out, new filters and it always fixed itself...white smoke as unburnt fuel seems to throw a spanner in the works..mmm, sounds odd.

Thanks summitt , oil may just be a coincidence. A mate of mine when he heard it suggested it could have been a fuel ping issue too. So mechanic probably only option, I can't really tell if power is dropping , but it certainly is not running as smooth as usual ( smooth probably not th right description for a defender ).

Been using Nulon in my Puma TD5 and the sons D3 with no problems for the last 6-8 months. I think it may be a fuel pressure problem as sugested.

I had similar problems, very similar sound, sometimes smoke, sometimes not....
Took the car to the dealers and it turned out to be the EGR valve.
There is a thread on it with some great tips provided by Lorryman and others....

I would disconnect the valve and see if things improve...

See my plight

Seems there is a ECU power train failure ( thinks that what the service rep called it) . Apparently when pluggin in the computer the car woud not talk to it and it then shutdown completely and would not start ! ( thats a long way off noisy valves and white smoke whcih is why it went there in the first place.)

there was a ECU in another car whcih they used and it apparently worked. hope that resolves noisy original issue.

This is sounding expensive.

anyway Ill report final findings when I finally get it back.
