As I sit in Broome waiting for a new fuel pump to be shipped up from Sydney, I was wondering if anyone has modified their pump and fitted an external pump instead? Hoping to a avoid this situation again. Although Broome is nice this time of year...

Too difficult with the high and low pressure circuits is what I understand
I always carry a spare personally
Only buy Genuine the aftermarket ones are short lived
Daniel from Mulgo sells a kit so you don't have to pull the fuel tank out to replace it

I've just fitted a Mulgo fuel pump hatch in my year 2000 110 Defender. If you have a long range tank, be careful drilling the access hole as the measurements in mine were different to Mulgo's instructions. A small exploratory hole enabled me to find exactly where to cut the main hole. It was easy and I did not need to cut any of the cross braces or lower the fuel tank. Pump came out easily. Cleaned inside the accessible parts of the tank too. I'd definitely recommend a Mulgo hatch and a spare pump for peace of mind in the outback. The OEM part is made by VDO and is much cheaper not in a LR wrapper. Try Hobson Industries or LR Centre in UK.
