Drove 900km today to look at a 2003 Disco TD5. First time I've driven a series 2. A few serious points worth noting:

This thing is louder than my mates 300TDi and not as smooth. You cant talk to people in the back seat without having a moderately raised voice. It has had an ECU flash power upgrade. Plant your foot and it often starts surging on and off(auto torque overload?). A noise and feel similar to having an engine mount/tranny mount knocking metal to metal. Starts up real nice. Love the engine noise outside, but this thing sounds like it's half way to my 79 series diesel. Hood lining drooping at back. Says it has new 'gearbox'. Showed me a receipt for the TC rebuild that was rebuilt after a failure first time on the beach. Note on invoice notes that the gear oil was burnt and very old. A couple of bolts holding the rocker cover shield are missing and it was rattling. Cardon joint looks a nice tan steamed colour, along with the UJ caps(is that the term), doesn't appear to have been touched recently. Washer reservoir lid missing. Plastic parts cracked here and there. Engine bay looks older than 2003, that corroded look. $14,500. I walked away. Good idea I think?

X2 on the not looking back.
Obviously been abused, and a Td5 certainly shouldn't be that loud or harsh.

Move on from that one, there are MUCH better D2a's around.

You will pay more than 14.5k for a good one,but usually you only get what you pay for.........

I think you are right, but I'm still depressed that a mate bought a 2003 7 seater S for 12k. He was going to sell it to me for the same, but now realises what a good deal he got!

Its amazing how good a deal you can get, well never happens for me but if your in the right place at the right time? I know a guy that bought a 2003 D2a TD5 with 275k on the clock, ARB winchbar, factory CDL. Very nice looking vehicle except it had a tiny amount of rust in the roof gutter in a couple of places. Geez it was pretty neat otherwise and he got it for $2500 :eek::eek::eek::eek: I nearly fell on the floor. Apparantly the owner had had enough of spending on it and said he knew it was worth more but just wanted to be rid of it. So ;) right place, right time all I ask is let me know if you find where the right place or time is :lol2:. Seriously I couldnt believe it!!!
Funny thing was he wanted to swap me for mine and although very tempted I felt hopefully mine ""hopefully hopefully"" would be a better more reliable vehicle.

Now it's the waiting for parts and time slots to fit them that's driving me nuts!

Not a TD5 and not sure where your from but there is a very nice 03 update 5 seater one with I think it was around 160k on the clock in the ford dealership in Kilmore. Its the same color as mine (Grey) with black (I think it was) leather interior which looking through the window looked unmarked or in very good nic. I cant vouch for the car as I dont know any background on it but geez its very neat, did'nt see any scratches with what I could see very good paintwork. It has 18' wheels, factory CDL:D. I don't know what the V8's are worth but they had I think it was around $15000 drive away. If someone wanted one I reckon it would be at least worth a look as it was IMO a neat unit.
Obviously have a look yourself to make your own judgement on it of coarse.
Thought it was worth a mention!

Go on have a look. Don't make me the only person looking for a TD5 that got a V8 :0

Value wise it depends on how long the dealer has had it as to how much bargaining power you have. Cars are not selling at the moment, especially V8s. Offer $11,500 and you'll probably get it for $12,000. The price difference equals a lot of fuel......

The white V8 with 108,000km(I think) is apparently immaculate. Had a V8 1995 Disco 1. The V8 is now is my 110. I want a diesel this time. A 2003 TD5 in Adelaide(Carpoint or Carsales) asking for 13,500 went for 11,500 today. I contactd the owner to find out how much it went for.

Given that it's currently got the amigos, if you wanted to you could barter it down.
What are the odds that the dealer knows his way around a LR, and specifically the amigos and their various fixes.
Barter it down, get them fixed up it would be a lurvely vehicle :)
I'll stick to my Td5 though, and laugh as I pass the V8s at the bowsers :D:D:D
There are a few Discos out there that were there when I was looking, over a year ago.
One of them looks real nice, lots of goodies.....just 450k + kms....
Mine popped up, I think I bought it about 2 weeks after I saw it.
Be prepared to wait, find the right one and grab it and run.
Occasionally I regret not buying something different, like a Defender, but then again I do enjoy dry feet and being able to hear :p

I'm going to check this one out probably on Saturday. If it all looks good what do you think would be a good starting price? I talked to the guy a day ago. He changes oil every 5000km with a synthetic 5W-40. His wife has put a small dent on the bumper from backing into a bollard. I've seen a whole 7 seater kit(panels, seats etc) on eBay for $900 I could fit to it. $19,000 is not going to happen.

Hi Coops71,

I was checking out the pics on the link you posted above and noticed something funny. Check out the photo of the engine bay. Specifically the back of the engine bay, just beneath bottom of the front windscreen is where the sponge pollen filter strip normally goes, in that grill looking strip which seems cracked and broken. In this pic, I can't see the black sponge filter for starters, then the vents look like they're broken or cracked and the top lip of the vent area in the middle looks like it's crooked and bent upwards.

That seems really strange to me as I've had a 2002 V8 D2 before and now I have "upgraded" to an '04 D2a TD5. I've changed the pollen sponge filter on both my D2's, hence why I noticed this abnormality. Might be worth asking the guy why those vents are broken and cracked and why the lip seems bent in the middle area. And finally, where's the sponge pollen filter? Seems an odd thing to break.

Just something I noticed which seems a bit odd, might be nothing serious. Just thought I'd let you know. Unless my eyes are playing games with me.....;)

Good luck with the D2a hunting! It took me 6 months to find my '04 D2a TD5. But they're the best! Awesome cars! Definitely worth every cent.

Cheers,

Ernie.

Hi Coops71,

Are you still keen to check this one out? I might be able to go have a look for you this Saturday as I've got the arvo free so can certainly check it out for you if you like. I'm a real fussy bugger so as long as you don't mind me being really fussy, I'd be happy to tell you what I thought of it.

But a disclaimer before you reply. I am no mechanic but as I said in my previous post, I've had an '02 D2 V8 and now an '04 D2a TD5. My D2a has had quite a few mods done as well now, some of it myself but mostly by ARB. I know my way around enough to tell you whether it's worth getting a proper mechanic to inspect it or get NRMA to inspect it etc.

Let me know if you want me to go check it out.

Cheers,

Ernie.

So to follow up on this car: He wanted 12,980. I offered 11,500 and he said OK. The VIN shows it as being midway through the 2004 run. Problems I have established: 3 Amigos and fuel pressure reg(currently a drip every 15 seconds). Only other issues is that the cruise control does not work and the passenger and rear door locks need lube(they try to move). Hoodlining is spot on and the interior is pretty much in very good condition except for the normal wear in the handbrake boot and a slight sloppy feel in the hand brake. Driver window switch lost it's cover. Surprise surprise I find a dual battery system with a fridge supply to the back. 10L of Penrite Diesel 15W 40 which I will try and swap for 5W40 with my Autoone friends. Associated filters ready to go. Drives beautifully. Low range and CDL have a nice positive feel. New auto, diffs and TC. Previous prospective buyers were put off by 3 amigos and diesel leak as well as missing sound insulator rocker cover(which he still has). EGR vacuum hose missing sort of had me thinking until I remembered it had been blanked. Front cardon joint was done with TC and auto. 2 inch lift, rock sliders, ABR bar, IPF spotties, Old man emu shocks, Sports nitro shocks. All work done by Rovertech(hope that is a positive) in Perth
I've ordered new oil pump bolt, genuine sump gasket. I'm going to change ALL fluids once I get it. Just one question: I figure I'm buying the later three pipe fuel reg, but do I need to buy associated gaskets and O rings , or do they come with the reg? I won't have the car until another week or so. Can't seem to find exact details even after searching. Three amigos can wait for little bit longer.

Nothing else needed for the Fuel Pressure Reg. it comes with everything you need, although I personally sleeve the 3rd hose that goes to the front of the block with some of the foil covered fiberglass sleeve to protect it from the heat as they can get very brittle.

Why has it had a replacement auto, diffs and transfercase already?
Ring Kevin and ask him what he thinks of it.
But at 11,500 it really doesnt matter as there will always be things wrong.
The hanbrake boots can be bought in leather from Ebay from the uk for 16 bucks grat value and looks.
I have had a look last week at a white 2003 Auto Td5 with 230k up in wangara for someone and it sounded and felt like a tractor. The grill was cut up as I suspect a winch was fitted but has been removed and also there was no centre muffler hence the noise.. I also think that the engine mounts were not good as the viration and harshness when driving was bad..My TD5 is as smooth as. it was 14k to buy. I have advise the person to walk away or get it much cheaper. Bodywise and interior was great...

I drove a green tractor the week before. Major harshness. Sounded like mounts gone bad, along with a bad front prop. I questionned the guy about why so much of the drive train was replaced. Originally the diffs were replaced by another mob after a bad diagnosis. The tranny was the culprit. TC was done at the same time. Owner is in the navy and rarely gets to use it. Has now been sucked into spending money on a woman. I was very skeptical initially, but it puts the previous vehicles I tested to shame, especially with regards to the interior. I have allowed $5,000 for initial fixes.

So I picked it up today. Babied it 450km home. Auto is very smooth. Diesel pressure reg held in there with its minor leak. Have to back off on the accelerator somewhat because the TRS chip overtorques making the limiter cut in when overtaking. Exhaust mod makes it a bit rumbly but it's ok. I did have a minor panic attack when the S and M light started flashing when I backed right off after doing 80kmh and did a three point turn to go back the other way. Went away after restarting car. A weak battery is apparently the major issue causing this problem. Ordering a nanocom next week. Parts arrive from UK about Wednesday: Wurth studs for manifold, and all the OEM gear to do the new pressure reg, oil pump bolt. Previous owner made sure the tank was full without me asking and gave it a good clean out and polish. Just one issue that bugs me that is not a killer and that is: why does the cruise control not work? It stays in the shed until the oil pump bolt, pressure reg and all fluids are changed.

My cruise doesn't work either. I've had my mechanic look at I and he said that the v8's have a cruise control box but the td5 doesn't so for my issue it could come down to 2 problems, something in the ECU or (hopefully) the set switch inside the steering control has come loose. There is still power to the button on the dash so that's not the issue. Not having cruise is a real pain but it's just a luxury I guess. I only really notice it when I drive a car with cruise then mine. :p

I've tried lifting/pressing the set button. The cruise switch light comes on. Thought maybe three amigos might have something to do with it. I'll interrogate the problem with a nanocom in the next couple of weeks.
