Hi All,

My 96 300tdi 130 is due for upgrade,( 400k on the clock) and am looking at 2006, 130. I've had a really good run out of the 96 mod and am a bit nervous about a newy,
Any comments would be appreciated

Thank you

No different, both can be good if properly serviced and both can be a nightmare if not.Do yourself a favour and test drive a TDCi before making a choice. Pat

As much as I hate electrics, the TD5 is a MUCH better engine than the Tdi.

In fact I (and others) would go so far as to say it is the best engine LR ever designed - possibly thanks to BMW improving the design before production.

The (oil) filtration is MUCH better than the TDI, the engine is much stronger (bottom end and head), and the TD5 should end up lasting a lot longer if well looked after.

I echo what Ben says. The Td5 is a VERY strong engine. I work on these for a living and to date, we have NEVER YET had a worn out one. Sure, plenty of damaged ones etc from neglect or big overheats etc but they would have to rank up there with some of the stronger jap diesels for longevity and reliability.

The Tdi is ALSO a great engine. Very reliable if serviced correctly, the problem with these engines is that they go so well, they see a fair bit of hard work and just can't tolerate high ambient temps and EGT's. Again, monitor the EGT's and service the cooling system religiously and all will be well:)

Td5s can be chipped safely and last a long time under hard work, a Tdi with the pump adjusted and boost pressures up can be a little behind the 8 ball when asked to do this day in, day out.

Both of these engines used for everyday driving should be happy to see 500,000km IME.

Look after them, they'll look after you.

I purchased a new 2006 model TD5. It was chipped at 60,000km and a larger intercooler was installed at around 130,000 km. These mods were done because I tow a fairly heavy boat frequently. In addition, on a yearly basis the boat is towed up to the NT for my annual barra trip. Rest assured the 110 and boat are well loaded.

The vehicle is well maintained and other than a couple of seals needing replacement the only issues have been:

3 diffs before 60,000 (or thereabouts) - A Salisbury replacement was put in and that has been the end of that problem.

New water pump at around 120,000 - as a matter of routine at that time I replaced all cooling and heater hoses in addition to taking out the radiator and having it cleaned.

A new clutch at 155,000.

I deliberately jumped in and bought the TD5 as a "run out" model. I had just written off a 2003 TD5 (which had no diff problems but did have a few more problems than my latest 110). I reckon LR actually got it "right" with the last of the TD5s - EXCEPT for that damned make-believe rear diff:mad::mad:

Anyway, I hope this run-down helps you in making your decision.:)
