Gearbox rate of degradation

So I went and saw my mechanic today as I was bleeding a bit of ATF and the service is due in a few weeks so thought I would just get stuff sorted all at once.

What I found out was that my transmission is leaking through 2 of the gaskets and that the recommendation is a new transmission. 2000 TD5 auto with 230k km's.

My question is for those who have been down this road, how long did your transmission last after the leaking started. Mine ramped up after over the last 1,500 km's, but at this stage the leak has not effected the fluid level. They want me to check the levels every week, but I am just trying to prioritize the funds.

Unfortunately I am in no position to do the work myself :(

Depending on which gaskets, why not just replace them, if everything else is ok?

The leak is usually the pump housing to body seal, pretty common but at 230K I am inclined to agree with them:( It would be a bit of a labour fest if the thing was removed at 230K to fix the leaks, only to have it fail at 250K, which is not an unusual interval.

Of curse, if budget dictates a removal and reseal instead of rebuilt trans, then that will have to do.

Correct Justinc on of the leaks is near the pump housing (minor of the 2) the other is at the back where the reverse gear is (Major).
The cost to replace the seal at the back is $700, not sure what the extra costs are for the pump housing seal is extra, probably not huge as it will be apart anyway.
The concern is that they pull apart a 230k gear box and I spend the money and it only lasts another 6 months because it is a 230k gearbox that has been pulled apart (pandoras box).

I agree that a replacement is needed and the way to go, just working out how quickly I need to do it.

I'm in the same boat . 2001 td5 auto just done 250k and just started to leak . The box is a bit slow to react and gets confused about when to shift sometimes too. How long do i have ??:(

What quantity of $$ (ball park) for a reconditioned ZF? Who are people using??

Mine always had the leak around the pump housing (a drip every couple of days, never had anyone tell me the ATF was low.
The second leak developed in the last 1,500 km and is far more rapid. This is the one that has pushed the issue to the floor.

I have been quoted $3000 to fit a complete transmission that has 60,000 km's on it. I believe it has been tidied up a bit, but not a full reco. Didn't really ask all the appropriate questions as I just realized a 3k bill had just arrived. My mechanic just happened to have it on a pallet in his workshop.

From the little research I have done the ballpark figure seems to be $3,500 - $5,000. A new landrover box is closer the the vicinity of $7,000.

Do they recondition them in an exchange type situation?
Might be a bit far for me but would still be interested if anyone has experience with them and costs etc.

my experience says you are saving $1500 odd by fitting that used box as opposed to reco. its your call but bear in mind that a used 4hp22eh can have faults, too, and warranty is a whole lot less.

This is definitely something I want to get right the first time, but I still don't know where I am going to get $3000 from.
I will speak to the mechanic and ask a few more questions about the donor transmission.
