Do you know what this rusty previously plastic covered thing is on your Defender? It holds your side mirrors on to the arms and mine were both quite rusty on my 96 110. Probably worth having a look at yours.

Mine too. Then your mirrors go floppy and won't stay where you put them.

Mine were still ok, but I snapped one off on a small tree and then discovered it when I tried to fix the aluminium arm to which the mirror is fixed. BTW I have so far fixed the snapped aluminium with the standard epoxy steel glue; hope it works for good :)

The rust on that side isn't a problem, it's the other side that counts and the shape of the wiggly bit at the other end from the hole.
I had the same problem as wally, go down the road and end up with mirrors all over the place.
Fixed it by cleaning the plastic ball on the mirror housing and the concave socket on the other side of this bit with WD430 and a rag. Also straightened the lugs on the end of this bit to give just a whisker more tension and the mirrors have been fine ever since. :):)

The left side mirror on my Deefer does that, I think of it as a good indicator of approaching the speed limit.... It only flops down at about 105kph:D
