I got mine done through a TJM dealer, who stocked airtec and he said for LR safari was the way to go.
Mantec ones are good though, so it really comes down to your preference on the looks :)

Safari are good, they look OK IMO, i much prefer the Mantec, but Safari is growing on me a bit haha. Either of them and you can't go wrong though :)

I have no experience with them, but have you seen these on ebay? It looks like someone may have copied either a TJM or Safari snorkel. It's just plastic, right?

I just meant that being plastic, it is probably fairly easy to copy. :)
I haven't decided which I like better... the mantec looks cleaner... the safari kind of looks like a giant slug has decided to call your fender home... but I still like it.

It depends what you want it for.
If it's mainly for water crossings, the safari is better.
If you do alot of dusty roads, then the rear facing intake of the mantec is better.
That said, you can (I'm sure) fit a pre-cleaner head to a safari, or just turn the intake around. Not sure the effect of the latter on its performance though.
I think Safari is the better option, it's handy having an Australian based product for warranty reasons I'd think.
Mantec is a single function, where as with a safari you can change it a bit.

Comedy gold. :Rolling:
Muppet you'd do well in Telemarketing. "The Safari not only excels at water crossings, but also it slices and dices your vegetables with it's innovative multi-purpose intake grill. But wait that's not all.... in addition to the already impressive list of functions the Safari will also pack your campsite while you take a dip in a billabong"

It doesn't work like that, I'm not a former boyband member who's long forgotten levels of teenage girl fame will add "Credibility" to the product!
I've been writing an essay all day, so I'm officially in "bull**** technical jargon padding" mode. :lol2:

I fitted a MANTEC Snorkel 1 month ago and it does what all elevated air intakes do, it delivers dry, cooler, cleaner air to the engine. Apart from the imaginary RAM effect often attributed to a SAFARI Snorkel i reckon it functions no better or worse than any other. I chose the MANTEC because it was unobtrusive looking. Different strokes for different folks covers it i reckon.

Can't agree with that . Every snorkle works on the same principle, the only variable is the level of care when installing. have look at.... www.discovery2.co.uk (http://www.discovery2.co.uk) and read his tutorial on installing the Mantec snorkle, then tell me why the Safari is better for water crossings. IIRC when I asked a similar question to OP, it was mentioned there. Perhaps the wording is not the best. I meant by that line was that mantec was better for dirt roads in that it sucked in less dust than a Safari in stock from as the head faces forward. So I really shouldn't have said "better", it's more along the lines of 'just water go safari, water and dust mantec' if that makes sense :)
I went with a safari because it was cheaper :p

Yup! - some metal work would be required because apart from having to match pipe and throat diameters the top part of the snorkel pipe does not finish vertical it has a rearward slant.

That's what I put on last week and came up ok. $199 from 4x4 direct in SA on ebay delivered. I've seen the same one auction for $160. I did a few things on the install a bit better and looks good.

Issues with their lack of UV protection, lower quality materials.
There's nothing stopping you, but it would probably degrade quicker than a genuine one.
That said, buy one, put some UV protection coat on it and make sure it's sealed properly and you should be fine :)

I wonder if things have changed in the 3 years since that info was posted.
I'm looking at a Scintex one, QLD company, and it comes with a 3 year warranty.

I read this as propaganda from Safari to scare people into buying they snorkel. Much the same as other big 4x4 companies saying there's is the best and the rest are rubbish.
I'm not suggesting for a minute that the one I got is the same quality as the main brands but for a 3rd of the price it's worth a try. If I was fitting out a new or $50k car I would go main stream for the confidence. Fitting it to my older D2 that is a bush car the cheaper option will probably outlast my car. Even it I had to fit 3 over 20 years I would still be ahead.
A regular coating of armorall helps with the UV protection.
I'll report back in a few years time. Must enter that in my 2014 diary.

Before I installed my Safari snorkel about 4 months ago on my 2004 D2a TD5, I researched and contemplated all of the cheaper ones, whether it's eBay ones, or Airtec or TJM etc. Ended up going with Safari because I justified it this way.
What is the damage and cost to me IF the cheaper snorkels were indeed inferior and in a few year's time, the plastic degraded and water got into my airbox and into the engine? Being a diesel, it's catastrophic. By trying to save a couple of hundred dollars today, it might end up costing me thousands in a few years time so is it worth it? Well, I plan on keeping my D2a for he next 10 years so it was an easy choice.
I ended up getting a really good deal from ARB in Moorebank (Sydney) because I installed an Air Locker at the same time, plus ARB side steps so the snorkel ended up costing only a bit more than the cheaper ones anyway! :D
Now, I am certainly glad I got the Safari!
Cheers,
Ernie.

Southdown 4x4 make a snorkel similar to a Mantec. The main difference being the metal pipe is made of stainless steel(I heard a rumor that the Mantecs have corrosion issues).
I chose the Southdown because it looks good, won't rust....and they throw in some free stickers woohoo.

With the addition of a snorkel head, prebending so it fit's right out of the box, powder coating, templates for cutting the guard so you don't make a mess of it, a welded manifold to match the intake to the air box, the piping between snorkel and manifold, plastic edging for the guard cut and a reasonable guarantee that it will fit with little or minor fettling.
Otherwise it's exactly like your one Scouse. :D

IMO, the Mantec looks 'home made' so what I'm trying to say is.....if you want a home made looking snorkel then make one yourself.
Mine's home made & looks better than the Mantec - it even has a genuine Land Rover snorkel head fitted to it :).
