I am contemplating getting a reversing camera with a seven inch screen. Has anyone tried mounting a screen this size just above the rear vision mirror, between the sun visors?

HI Dave,

Never tried to mount anything quite that large there. Mind you a fair number of UHF radios get fitted in a similar spot and they can't be any smaller surely.

Then by the time you consider the surround and mounting your 7" screen is probably going to be at least that wide and possibly more and height wise probably 4.5 - 5". That's a lot of real estate to hide up there without getting in the way of the mirror. Anyway I guess I'm preaching to the choir about that stuff anyway.

I know they had a GPS display of some kind up there in the up spec D2A's in the UK, so it may just be possible. Don't know what size screen they used though.

Sounds like a interesting project anyway. Hopefully somebody has actually tried to do something similar. I'm sure you'll hear from them soon.

Cheers,
Iain

G'day Dave,
Dont know legalities but what if you replaced mirror completely with
7" screen & had it wired to ignition so that screen was always on? You could use av input line for this and still utilise screen for other functions ie. dvd etc, there is now a TPMS system that has an av out that would work well with this.

Martin. I don't want to lose my original mirror. I like the compass too much. There are reversing monitors that are similar in size to a mirror that clip onto the original mirror. I would go this way if I was to adopt your idea.

That's a great idea! I've just purchased a 130 defender which will shortly have a canopy permantly attached which will block the view through the back..

The idea that I could have a LCD mounted over the rear view mirror showing a live rear view is excellent!

I'd love to know the legalities of such a setup. I'd be concerned about the law regarding front video displays wired to shut off when the vehicle is in motion

I bought a 7" reversing camera screen, with a camera, for about $100. The screen clips onto the existing mirror of my disco. You can wire the screen to either operate when in reverse or to be switched on manually. I chose the latter. For normal driving the new screen operates as a normal rear view mirror (although is not as bright) and when loaded up with gear (when I can't see out the back) I turn on the screen and it becomes my rear view. I also use it in heavy multi-laned traffic when I need to be careful of my blind spots.

/hijack - sorry Dave

I've just put a cargo barrier in, so no doubt next camping trip I won't be able to see out the back. I was thinking about doing this. Good solution in your opinion? Which one did you buy? (I was looking at ebay)

if its a reversing camera and not a replacement for the rear view mirror - what about attaching it to the sun visor, flip it down when you want to use it?

Justin,
Not sure if you're asking me or Dave but here goes. Bought mine a couple of years ago on ebay. There were several suppliers of very similar gear. I chose one who was local but I can't remember who now. I'm very happy with the arrangement. The only thing you need to remember when using the reversing mirror is that the camera makes everything look twice as far away. I have my camera mounted inside the rear door so I don't have a problem with dust, rain, mud etc. Camera is positioned inside the swipe line of the rear wiper so I can always see out.

Yep that's what I was after. Thanks. I've just added this onto the list of things to buy so I can see out the back when the cargo area is full to the roof. :D
