Hi, just joined, I have just purchased a 1971 Series 2a workshop and googled the chassis number and it came up with a few old threads on AULRO from 3yrs ago by a previous owner - dunarunna (hope its ok to list members in threads!)
I wondered if this member is still on and if anyone has any info or pics please ?
Chassis no 25335375G with a modified or repair replacement on the rear body, it looks like the sides have been fabricated as a replacement for the toolboxes normally there, the floor is a workshop floor with a plate on stating 1966 s2a so looks like an earlier rear body, possibly repaired was fitted to this chassis cab, also there is a plate fitted saying it was in an accident after only 9 miles so maybe this rear body was fitted then ?
Any info much appreciated, thanks

Welcome to the forum. I was wondering where that one went. The original ARN (Army Rego Number) was 178-047. The is a wealth of info here on this site as well the REMLR (Registry of Ex-Mil Land Rovers). Have a look at the following links.

Thanks Guys, from researching on the web links you psted it looks like mine was a batch of replacement vehicles for ones lost or damaged in Vietnam so maybe thats how it aquired a 1966 rear body as they salvaged what they could.
With the front mounted exhaust exiting sideways, does this affect fording at all compared to a standard rear exiting exhaust, I assume that as long as the engine is running then no issues with water in the exhaust ?
Lastly, On a seperate note, back in the Uk we used to brush the leaf springs with a mixture of oil/diesel or petrol/oil mix to lubricate the springs and make them work a bit better, this was the constant battle against the damp and wet, here with the often dry dusty conditions would this practice cause the mixture to combine with dust/sand and form in effect a grinding paste between the leafs ?
Cheers

40 "wide light" workshops were made in 1971. IIRC none were made in 1970 at all.
There is a thread (which I will try and find) documenting the 1971 workshops and I think we got to about 10. I have 2 (178-039 and 178-045)

Hopefully the pic has uploaded successfully !
I noticed an old thread about a 'damage plate at 12 miles', mine has one at 9 miles but as per my Earlier Post I wondered if this was affixed after a previous body was used, mine has a plate on the rear body saying 1966 and when supplied new it was a chassis cab

It does look good and create a large load area, well made and in keeping with the vehicle, not sure if it was a replacement job whilst with the Army or constructed since, the floor is original and the plate is fixed to the floor behind the rear wheelarch hump.It has all the fittings arond the side for the rear tarp which I also have, the rear tailgat is full width, when I searched the number it said it was a Machinary platform.
She was previously owned by dunarunna and stripey1
Anyone have ideas on the pro's and con's of oiling the leaf springs ?

Now you know why I want your Workshop. It's rarer than an Australian delivered 101. It makes a Gunbuggy look commonplace.
juddy
21st August 2012, 08:28 PM
So workshops with head lights in the wings 40 in total
What about other variants with head lights in the wings?
And gun buggys how many of these made?
Mick_Marsh
21st August 2012, 08:43 PM
There were also forty series three workshops which are also wide light, of course.
As far as I am aware, the workshops are the only ex-mil SIIA wide lights.
Don't know how many gunbuggies were made but I'm guessing more are in the hands of collectors and survive than the SIIA wide light workshops.
For me the ultimate Ex-Mil series would be a fire tender. I know where there is one just crying out for a little TLC but the owner doesn't want to sell it and if he did, I'd be well down on the list.

Excluding the Series 3 ones..... i was meaning... different wing to the late 2a wing too. They have the vent.
Me too my want list is a ex Military Land Rover fire appliance.
It going to be TACR1...............

Guys,
The fuel Gauge does not work, as it has a dipstick on each Tank I thought maybe they never fitted senders on the Tanks or bothered with any wiring but it has the flick over sender switch on the dash for either tank so I am guessing there is an elec prob, beford I go investigating do you have a working fuel gauge for both tanks or is it just the dipsticks ?
Secondly the front wings have small cracks at the rear corner of the cutout part, it has been ally wekded before but has cracked again, it seems to be due to the flex but I noticed the wings vibate to the point of making a noise when the engine is running, which I can stop by gripping with my hand, is there maybe support brackets missing or has anyone got a solution for this ?
Cheers

Andy
The switch on the dash just selects which fuel tank (sender) the gauge actually reads. It does not select which tank your fuel is drawn from, that is done mechanically via a C/O switch located just under your left knee (providing you are sitting in the workshop :D).
The cracks in the guards is a standard issue and is usually repaired by riveting a small alloy patch panel inside the guard. I will try and find a pic of 1 of mine and post it up.

thanks Paul, yes it is just the switch for the gauge, will have to check the wiring from the gauge thru to the tanks
that was the other option as need to stop it as the cracks are getting longer, interested in seeing your pic ! thanks

The only pic I can find (at short notice) is of an old 64 GS wreck I have. I have drawn a red outline of the parch shape and you can see the rivots holding it on. If no-one else posts up a pic, I will take a fresh photo of my 71 workshop guard for you.
Firey (on this forum) also has a 71 workshop and he found (the missing) front TAC plate being used to repair one of his guards.

Thanks Paul, thats great, will sort them out, the had been ally welded previously and I coldweld them both sides but today lent on the wings whilst doing some bits and the cracks were back !
You will need a few rivets to repair that one in the pic !

Thanks Paul, neat job and in keeping with the Landy !
Juddy, this is how mine look now, i think first time they were welded and ground smooth, looks neat but crack back straightaway, 2nd repair left weld runs for strength but still cracked through the weld, so will grind flush and pop rivet strengtheners on inside like Paul's, interestingly the passenger wing hardly flexes but there is movement in the drivers one yet they there is no bracket missing or anything else to cause this !
Thanks for the pics guys !

Hi Guys,
On the dash the cold start amber light which is housed within the speedo is illuminated, as it is an ex Army petrol did they use this light for another purpose or is it just a fault I need to sort ?

It is a Landy thing. It is an indication your choke is pulled out. Check choke switch and wiring behind the dash

Cold start light from memory is operated by a switch arrangement on the flex cable to the carby.
The switch is not the most high tech or reliable thing around.
The light nas no other function.

That sounds on the right track, I oiled all the carb binkages so maybe its run into the switch, I've had a dozen or more Land Rovers in the UK, a lot diesel and I dont think I have had a petrol where that amber light worked !

Hi all
Update on the list of these vehicles. I now have "Ebay dec 08: 25335831G" :-)
Looked at it a week ago, looked at it again on Friday and bought it.
It's in reasonable condition. I had better join REMLR now :-)
