And so intrepid readers, our story begins on a overcast winters day in the centre of a paddock.....
On Thursday last week I became aware of a clearing sale just up the road from my place (abt 15 kms)
In the sale were 3 land rovers (marked as “early”) and “land rover parts”.
So first I was disappointed, I thought I’d quizzed enough people to be told where all the early landys are/were and had an idea of what was available in the area!! And these so close!
I spoke with the owner he said he believed all were non goers- with engines either seized or stopped up through non use... Unfortunately it had been so long since he did use them and his wife now battling a serious illness so he couldn’t recall which had which problems..
On Saturday the sale started at 9.30, I know the auctioneer and because I have a son playing footy at 8.30 it was going to be a close call!, I rang Budgie (the auctioneer) and asked him where in the plan they came up and what time he thought... 3rd row was his reply.. and it wont take long, get here asap after that footy!
So I did!, I arrived, registered and raced over to find a number of people pawing over the landys...
I did my best to sus the cars and the people out as the auction drew perilously close...
“They look shocking”,
“ that’ll never ever panel beat straight”,
.
“thats got a holden motor”
.
“thats leaning badly...wonder if its more than tyres.?..”
.
“I heard the chassis rust real bad on these early ones...”
.
“They drive like a bastard and they buck more than a hillbillys teeth”
.....were all comments I heard...
.................................................. ................................. ...coming from my mouth!! :D :o:angel:
The auction arrived ...the moment of truth.... will I be able to outbid everyone else? .....will I withstand the pressure at the auction coalface?......what is that smell? (oh pardon me... :D ).....
Well, punters will our hero (that’s me by the way) win over the nasty other bidders at the auction??? Stay tuned....
Yeah like the title isn't a give away....:p

Ok the story so far..... well, just read the above posts... that’ll be easier.... :wasntme:
But back to the story punters.......
when we left our hero was engaged in a battle royale with the auction going hordes..... can he prevail???
Lets find out...
The auction arrived at the highlight (well for me, the 28 farmall tractors seemed to attact some people??) I decided on taking a shot at the first one of the three, I only had $500 and the auctioneer ( a good bloke) started with his summary of the vehicle....
It had new tyres fitted (when it was delivered from the factory),
it had a fully functioning motor (at some time)
it is completely original (there isn’t another exactly like this one)
and so on...
he started the bidding at $1000,
so I bid $200,
he moved to $950,
so I bid $200,
He moved to $900, t
hen $850 then $800
and I maintained the only bid of $200 much to the amusement of the gathered crowd...
The tension was building, the beads of sweat formed on his brow and his voice started to break...
“C’mon surely this is worth more than $200 ?” he called,
realising he was right I moved my bid to $201...
He went to $750, still silence,
then $700,
then $600..
Again I bid $201...
still he continued...
“OK who will give me $500?” he asked pleadingly,
all eyes seemed to turn to me, I felt like a tennis player at Wimbledon!
I did feel good though as so far I was the only bidder!!
Ok $500? I don’t want to sell it to Digger here for $201!
“Well” I said “I can help fix that.” so I bid $200 again!!...
<<Laughter through the group, including Budgie :D >>...
OK he says, I’ll accept the $201 bid!! (I felt great!)
then someone else started bidding...
What the..!!??
so the bidding climbs,
$250,
$300,
$350,
$400...
I bid $450, now getting nervous...
and the other guy hesitated and very quickly Budgie knocked it down to me!
Phew!!
Well punters, our hero has wrestled the evil bidders (well maybe thats a stretch...) and won the first round.. what happens from here??? Lets read on.....
The auction moved on to the other two vehicles, both went for around the $500 mark... then to the pallets of Landy gear, they had some shovel back seats, a fuel tank, springs, assorted bits and pieces, two front guards (steel?) a few bonnets (one with and one without tyre holders) some radiators and a grill surround/radiator support that I recognised as early s1 (perfect for my early parts project “HOIST”).
All exceeded my $50 remaining funds...
Holy smoke punters, what has he done??,
............................was it too much?,
................................................di d he miss out on those other parts??
.................................................. ......................Stay tuned and read on for the exciting answers to these questions..
digger
15th August 2012, 10:44 PM
So, punters when we left our hero he had just won round one but was severely beaten in the following rounds,
...............will he fall down?
...................will his corner throw in the towel to save him?
......................will he be able to convince his 9 year old (who is with him at the clearing sale) not to mention anything to the minister for war and finance before he can 'soften the blow?'...
I later negotiated with the purchaser of the pallets I wanted bits from and got two thin springs, the radiator surround, a dash panel (minus fuel guage) aircleaner and precleaner and a few wiper units for $40... I was happy with that :).... for now
One of the cars (the third in line which had an early holden motor) was sold to a bloke who wanted “a shooting buggy”... after having gone roo shooting in a corolla the night before!!
He had no idea about them but was keen to learn and I tried to fill in what I could, directing him to this website and giving him my phone number (and he promised he’d give me first option if he decides to sell but I think he has fallen in love with it.)
The second and most of the pallets sold to a local scrappie  who stated he had bought them as his mother wanted a “old jeep” (arrrgh).. he also promised to contact me before any sale or scrapping of the parts or car... This one had a PTO AND GOVERNOR fitted!! (arrrghh again!)
Anyway, following soon will be some photos and what information I can find about the wee beastie (as yet unnamed and un running!).
Cheers Punters , stay tuned for the next instalment (whenever it gets put on :D )and see what our intrepid rescuer does next!!

So punters, the story continues...
When we last left our intrepid reporter he was carting the lifeless body of the
Series 1, 80 inch back to his house for further inspection and a possible autopsy..
Well what will he find out punters?
............................. What surprises could the wee beastie have in store?
(................................................. .....Why does he keep asking these stupid questions?)
Stay tuned for the answers to all these questions (except the last one!)
After a thorough clean (well, a decent tub anyway) he removed things like:-
a birds nest from under the rear on the spring/diff!
Lots of chook wire
Enough old ciggy packets to reopen the company/brand..
Numerous old ammo shells (expended)
A number of old ammo rounds (live )
More chook wire...
what else could be in here???
OK Punters, stay tuned for information about the wee beastie...
Since our intrepid reporter has fallen in love with it,
(and been fiddling about with its bits :D ),
he figured he’d better start the proper way... by dating it!
Is it all original or has it had surgery?
Maybe its had organ transplants?
Maybe its had cosmetic surgery? (I doubt that!)
What did he find? Read on to find out....

Anyone picking up a date theme here??
The generator
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/08/514.jpg
Ohhh? Hold on to your hats Punters!!
looks like we found evidence of surgery!! That date 11/49 appears a tad earlier than the rest of the wee beastie... what else might we find?
Read on dear reader read on.......
The coil..
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/08/515.jpg
(ahh back to the theme.... )
Well punters I’d be tempted to think she was knocked up in October or November 1951!!
Will we be able to get the wee beastie started?,
........................will it run?
................................will he stop asking these questions?
(yes :D )

While we are at it sports fans, in efforts to breathe life into the
non functioning motor, our hero has had to 'rebuild' the dizzy cap
and leads, using a series of different old dizzy caps and leads to fix
up the dizzy cap
During this exercise I noticed something unusual... whilst putting all the leads, caps etc in together I have noticed the spark plug "shrouds" (bakelite) are of three different designs..
see attached photo,
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/08/475.jpgno
hole in side
one hole in side
two holes in side..
what reason would there be for these differences??

Last time we called in on our intrepid adventurer, he was wrestling with the engine in the wee beastie trying to see if it could be resus'ed...
How did he go?
................How bad does it seem??
............................how does he intend to bury it if its dead?
Well Punters read on!
As you can see by the above photos the vehicle is 60 years old this year, and its been "used"!!.
Its still running (well, has!!) original motor, and original radiator, it has an OLDER generator, and looks like original coil and fuel pump.
After rebuilding the dizzy cap and leads, and accepting the SU pump wasn't going to "spring into life" our floundering fiddler had to bypass the starter button (its jammed on!) and take out the aircleaner so he could reach and play with the carby..hooked up a temp. fuel source (brake fluid bottle, bit of old fuel pipe, bit of fuel hose and WHA LAH!;)
Finally she started turning over (using my screwdriver key!) but still no spark...
Our muddling mindless mechanic was getting very frustrated when he remembered that maybe turing the key on may help (oops!)
And like frankenstiens monster....suddenly..
IT'S ALIVE
Yay!
:D
Bad news though sports fans...
.................. stay tuned to find out what was wrong...
OH NO!!
Looks like the water pump is siezed , stuck, jammed, buggered, knackered......
it's not moving, nor obviously is the fan, the fan belt is down to cloth and completely useless but the car (which was supposed to be siezed) is running :)
So now Punters it seems I need to look at water pump and then step by step work through things..
Tune in next time for ...well......................, more 'stuff"
Cheers

80" Land Rovers were built with all sorts attachments to make life easier for the farmer and his wife
So this protrusion was for the lesser known device for cleaning the house, utilizing the vacuum generated by the motor to draw dirt from the floor where the farmers muddy boots have been.
So Land rover gave that device the name of, 80" vacuum cleaner attachment portal, essential for making Wee Beasty feel usefull .

The one with the pipe came out of "HOIST" (the '49 bits car)
but the one I bought when I got this wee beastie is the one I'll send you (standard I believe), just have to clean it out, maybe even give it a thin coat of gloss, weigh it and work out post...
It won't happen overnight but it will happen!
The tub on this wee beastie is very "panel rough" but otherwise good (!!) I may need to look about for another, the one on hoist is obviously different, and the 53 parts car tub is BAD!, So anyone nearby have a spare tub they can spare?

This one is easy, Item 1----Water pump assembly----- Part Number 241884 ---(The same number for both engines)
*- best place (and price) to get said waterpump?
Try Jim at Four wheel drives, Melbourne (Tell him Arthur sent you and he will say Who?)

Digger, don't even attempt to remove the top part of the thermostat housing unless you know for a fact that the thermostat is US. The outlet pipe housing (see below) is attached to a "box" like (part #263670) and this housing is fixed to the front of the head by 3 long and one short studs. Remove this housing complete with the outlet pipe and inlet pipe bits still fitted. The whole housing assembly merely sits on top of a rubbery washer and copper tube to the water pump.
The actual thermostat outlet pipe housing itself is a rather delicate piece of equipment made out of a reasonably soft aluminium foil-like material and prising it out with a screwdriver or the likes of such can do irreparable damage.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/08/11.jpg
I have just spent a couple of days re furbishing my thermostat housing using a "dremmel" and some "quik-steel", (an epoxy two pack synthetic metal mix available from most car outlets- similar products have different names) to rebuild the eroded away shelf upon which the actual thermostat sits inside the housing, and also had an acquaintance from the MJCQ turn me up a new outlet pipe section as per the photo below.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/08/12.jpg
Take note that the seal around the thermostat is actually between the internal "shelf" inside the housing, the thermostat itself and the bottom of the collar of the outlet pipe housing, not between the outlet pipe housing and the thermostat housing.
There are only the three openings to this housing, the small inlet hole from the water pump itself at the bottom, and the two inlet/outlet pipes unless your was fitted with a heater. There are two other outlets but both of mine are blanked off. The face that is sitting against the front of the head, even though there is an outlet from the head itself, is sealed off and does not allow water ingress.
Hope that this of some use to you.
Regards
Glen

I need 12V to flasher can so alternating power to operate LED front and back(eg blink)
My question is this...
can it be done off the one switch? (i think so)
I assume two sets of wires from blinker arm 'blade"(instead of the usual one), that being 1 to trafficators , and another to flasher can and onwards, BUT will this:-
** overload the switch?
thinking standard (replica with hazards switch) magnatec style indicator arm OR (I prefer) bakelite (old style) switch in centre of windscreen..
**So, if going via bakelite switch how can I get front and rear LEDs to flash as hazards? (I assume another switch...?)
Interested in wiring designs - step by step if needed!!
But set out for a pinhead like myself to understand please...
Photos if someone has done it?
The trafficators are held open and lit by the constant power they cannot have too much variation as I understand it as they'll close/open/close open etc etc until buggered!!
I hope thats clear.... (probably like mud! )
ask if there is more info needed...
Cheers

Hi Digger
To get the wiring size right use this guide.

to divert the current away from the switch, a couple of automotive relays can be wired to operate the trafficators with the indicator switch.
Important! :rulez: always use a fuse at the point where any power is picked up from.

These are the units destined for the wings, L489 lenses I think, with L488 double filament bulb holders.

There are cast-iron water pumps available on Ebay, which don't fit perfectly and require a bit of grinding and a thread change - quite cheap though and better than a corroded one,

Last one I bought was from the 4wd mob in Vic. $175. One hole needed opening with afile but its still working OK. No complaints yet.

Regards
Glen
There is in fact 4 openings, there is a very small hole about 1/8" in the back of the housing into the head. This is a bleed hole and is often corroded over.
I find if you use 2 nuts on each of the retaining studs that hold down the top outlet to remove them completely the top will come off without too much damage as the thermostat generally needs changing.
