View Full Version : D1 300tdi Auto Trans Clunk

I have had my 98 auto tdi for 9 years, done 190k and has been a reliable ride. When pulling up to stop it seems to be clunking as it automatically changes down into first. My mechanic seems to think it is normal for these and probably just wear.
Is this the answer or does anyone have any other clues?

When was the trans last serviced?? They're due every 100kkm so maybe its due for one and needs a good flush (mine needs the same at 327kkm).

Sorry Will if you were to leave them that long they will help prop up the tranny rebuilding industry:eek:
I recommend NO MORE than 40K interval, more frequently if arduous towing etc.

Mine does this a bit sometimes when changing down. I think its wear in the transfer box input spline and I read somewehere there was an upgrade part to resolve the issue. Mine doesn't seem to have gone any worse in the last 6-7 years so I decided to leave it for the time being.

Some of the reason is a tight trans kickdown cable, if it shifts late from 1st to 2nd then this will be the cause of some harshness dropping back to 1st.
Wear/ clearance in the trans clutches will also cause a thump from time to time.
I wouldn't say it is 'normal', but it is common.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I honestly can't recall my mechanic recommending a tranny service. Is it best to have a tranny specialist look at it and if so can anyone recommend someone in Perth?

Eeeek, i could have sworn I read that somewhere, i've only done 8,000kms in my car so it will get serviced at 330kkkm as the sticker on the screen says :)

What is considered a "service" with these ZF auto trans?
I have not had mine since new, but it has now done just on 189k Kms. I have a Wynn`s flush done every 25k Kms and it operates very smoothly. The dealer here would not even attempt to remove the pan and clean / change the filter, as they had many failures following such a "service".
I do not tow with it, but it does operate in high temperature, stop / start conditions most of the time.
