I'm trying to update java, but when i try the online install, its downloads a .bin file and when you try to open it, it does nothing

When i try the offline install kit, i get a popup message saying "The procedure entry point SetDllDirectoryA could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"

os: XP Pro
browser: Firefox 11.0

I am the last person to give computer advice, however, Java recommend to uninstall the old Java before download of the upgraded programme. Further, Windows XP is a bit old nowadays, does it support the Java you are trying to download? Check the Java you are trying to download for compatibility, it should be listed on the download info somewhere.

Don't really know where you have downloaded your Java update files from but I don't think you should have a '.bin' file. You may have got hold of a Java update for Linux.

Did you download from here Java Downloads for All Operating Systems (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)

If not, then try the 'Windows' downloads and also see the instructions for removing older versions on that page before updating.

When you download you should be getting '.exe' files.

that was my source Ferret, they actually download as binary files, hence the .bin file extension.....

problem seems to have sorted itself out (in as much as that java is working as normal as it does) after several uninstall/install/reboot cycles.....

Strange, they come down as '.exe' files for me. Anyway if its working well and good.
