Hi all,

I'm going to paint my defender in the next few weeks. It will be matt camo green with lots of black chequer plate. I got the paint from Protec after some good advice from this forum. I'm going to do "before" and "after" shots once I work out how to put photos on this site.

The big question is, should I remove the roof to paint? It would be pretty tricky to paint up that high, I figure. The roof could do with resealing also. Once off, I could sit it on milk crates, which would be much easier. I was going to take the doors off and the windscreen (replace the windscreen rubber too). I was planning to paint in sections.

I was going to shout myself a new spray gun, gravity fed. The question is what size. The tech data sheet for the camo green states 1.8mm to 2.0mm. The paint people in the shops state 1.4mm for enamel. I'm confused.

All advice appreciated.

Watching replies with interest, I wanna do the same. Personally I'd take the roof off. It's easy enough to do.

Trust the tech data sheet :)

If you don't mind the extra work, having components at a waist level will make life a lot easier for you. But it can be done still together.

Personally I would opt for the 1.4 tip for a respray. It will be a much neater finish, you will find it will not leave a thicker film of product like a 2 tip which after 6 months will lead to cracking and flaking.
2 tips and up are more for the primer filling side which gets cut back to a thinner film anyway.
