Is anyone using the Compegps software (Land 7) on a Mac or the Two Nav app on an iPad. If so what are your opinions and can you load your own digital maps. I recently purchased an iPad and then the Mud Map HD app but am very disappointed with the app as it has less detail than I have on a Garmin Map 60csx with the Garmin topo map loaded. Any advice would be welcome.

The main issue with Two Nav is the lack of mapping. It could be useful if there was better selection, but AusTopo1:250000 plus some westprint mapping doesn't look like a compelling argument for investing in the app.

At the moment MemoryMap has best map availability (http://memory-map.com.au/digital-maps/topographic-maps-australia.html), although it is far from perfect.

Avenza's PDF Maps (http://www.avenza.com/pdf-maps) now has most of the Hema touring maps available for in-app purchase. In addition there are some interesting maps published by Meridian Maps covering several popular melbourne 4wding spots which aren't available electronically in any other format - even ozi-explorer. The VicMap pdfs which can be bought online are compatible with the PDF Maps app, and are far more up to date than the topo mapping for Victoria available from MemoryMap (2012 vs 2009).

Bitmap (http://nixanz.com/bitmap/) and Multiplans (http://multiplans.net/en_index.html) are good alternatives if you want to use ozi maps. The big limitation is that they cannot handle maps which cross Zones properly. While this might not sound like a big issue, the boundary between zones 54 and 55 is just to the west of melbourne, and products like Spatial Vision's VicMap Book DVD has large composite maps covering the west of Victoria which span the two zones.

I should clarify "cannot handle" comment - the apps will load ozi format maps spanning zones but fall back to lat/long alignment which results in the map being misaligned with the gps grid.

Attached is a pic of the Spatial Vision Melbourne 1:100000 composite illustrating the intersection of two zones. OziExplorer is able to correctly align these kinds of maps.

Thanks Paul,

I have a laptop with Trackranger and have used this happily for many years, it performs a similar function as Oziexplorer when crossing zones etc. The idea of using an ipad was exciting at first due to the battery life and size, however having surfed through most available apps I have yet to see anything that can actually compete with trackranger.

I'll keep looking and taking advice.

Hi Greg,

I know what you mean, I have spent a quite a bit of time looking at Apps trying to find something that is easy to use, and has a good range of mapping. I have ended up using a Chinese GPS with OziExplorer and MemoryMap for most tasks. I tend to use the Spatial Vision maps for most of my Victoria driving and I'm willing to suffer the slight clunkiness of the device so I can run OziExplorer.

I did take away an iPad running Memory Map and the Hema maps for Darwin/Kakadu region and that worked well enough. I find the hema maps are ok but miss a lot of detail - even a fairly major road from the Stuart Hwy to Batchelor didn't appear on the current edition Hema maps giving rise to a bit of a "WTF" moment as we approached the turn off.

cheers
Paul
