Gday All,

Have the chance to pick-up a set of this brand alloy rims (Performance) and the load rating seems fine, but recall reading somewhere about people having problems with Aftermarket alloy rims cracking, and wondered if these were the brand that had the problems.

Also for those who have gone down the 17" rim path, what size tyre's do you need to run to get the speedo reading correct. Am using the standard 18" at the moment. 255/60/18 think it is.

Thanks in Advance.

Cheers Ean

I'm assuming Performance do the BB6 rim, there are a few guys on the forum with them, I think the early one had some issues, I've heard one issue recently, that was Jonesfam from Doomagee.

As for the speedo, 265/65/17 or 254/70/17 should get it close, at the moment I have 265/70/17s and mine it out by about 2kph too fast.

The BB6 rims are the ones that crack.
I have a friend in the game who turned me off of them...
Better to grab some X5 BMW rims and some new wheel nuts...
You'll get out of it for $400.00 then
If you're keen, let me know...

You could use your Faultmate to fix that.

I run 245/70/17,speedo is identicle to 255/60/18,the OEM size.
That is reads around 4k's less than actual at 100k/hr.
So when the speedo says 100k's,you are actually doing around 96k's.

The BB6 rims have been changed, they now have a series two version which I have but just recently found cracks , the full set were replaced no questions. I will be watching these very closely.

Thanks All,

Think I will just buy some decent A/T style tyres for my 18" rims and be done with it.

Thanks All

I have the bb6 rims and run 265/65*17 d694 bridgestones they are slightly larger but I reckon the speedo is still out by about the same 4-5 kph.
The other thing to consider is gearing although not much of a difference at this size going larger starts to reduce acceleration. Not to mention leaglity issues.
This size also fit in spare wheel location.
Cracks..:o.bugger I will have to wash the car now to see if that is an issue.

17 inch BMW X5 rims with muddies have left my winch unloved and unused.
Cost if you keep looking can be under $50 each, I got four at under $10 and others at $50each to get six for myself. AT are a good unless it get a bit muddie, a bit slippery or even a bit to steep. :D Put road rubber on your 18s and think of the fun you can have with out getting stuck with the 17 inch.:D Have some unloved ATs for 18 inch rubber running down on the tar now. They were the ones which gave my winch a good work out on most outings.

Not as much choice available in 18's as 17's . I have a set of the BB6 rims, and have not had any dramas. I use the 17's for off road only.

I have a set of performance rv-5 on my D4 and after having just returned back from the cape I haven't had a single problem with them. Although looking back performance steered me away from the bb6 to these when I was buying them.....

Maybe not quite as much, but at last count I had 34 different AT's listed for 18" rims that fit the D4 - so the choice is "more than adequate"!

The reality is the D3 is 90% road car that the BOSS drives daily, so a good set of A/T will suffice, and comparing $$$ there is not that great a price difference to warrent buying rims and tyre's.

But in a couple of years when I am thinking of doing the Canning again, then 17's may be a more realistic option

I just got another puncture in my back left OEM Wrangler (6 holes in 6 months - all onroad) this week so it is time to get a change of tyres. Going GG ATs in the standard 18" rims and later Maxxis Bighorns on my 17" BMW rims (would prefer BFG MT KM2s but they are a bit expensive).
However everyone I have spoken too have said the MTs on the 17" are actually OK as an everyday tyre so considering whether to save money and just put the 17" muddies on.
I could put the 18" on the camper.

Whilst many people are happy to live with MT's as a daily tyre, be aware that:
* Wet road performance is reduced.
* Fuel consumption at highway speeds is worse.
* Noise is increased, although not uncomfortable until the tyres start scalloping.
* The shoulders will wear rapidly, reducing their performance in mud.
* MT's tend to be more difficult to balance (although never had problems with the Bighorns).
They look good though

Gordon

I agree, that seems to be the general view and I also thought that but people I have spoken to who have them (Bighorns) on D3s have found most of the above not to be the case - certainly noise of the KM2s on my 101 is non existant but a RRS and 101 are worlds apart.
As I can get GG ATs (not AT2s) for $270 I have decided to go dual wheels - they will go on the 18s for everyday use and occasional light offroad and beach work and I will get Bighorns on the 17s for extended offroad use.

And you will also be giving the jack a good workout.
I still recon you can't do better than a set of LT's in A/T or M/T on 17's
That way the spare will still fit where it belongs, speedo, gearing, etc is still correct, and you will have a tough tyre.
Oh,and the jack & winch won't be needed:)
Just my 2 cents worth........

I occasionally run Bighorns on my RRS, albeit oversize ones. The car handles like crap and the noise is quite noticeable. Squirms in the wet. Maybe not so noticeable in a D3?

Hi Gordon.
There is one other factor.
There is always the debate on 17" vs 18" for off road use ? I prefer that extra rubber between the road and rim, but I accept that some models cannot retro fit back to 17" rims. You have to do the best with what you get.

G'day,
Where are you buying these from? Performance direct or a tyre dealer? Ball park figure. I'm looking for 8 of them. If not I'll be going for steel dynamic wheels.

That is with the faultmate, we have a feeling it might be faulty, just seeing what we have to do about it.

For those who can run 17's.... I've found another wheel that suits...
Load rated and much nicer than the BB6 :D

Not a priority for me as I have the 2.7L but will investigate and see what we can find.
