Looking at a 2006 Honda Civic for #1 daughter.

The price & kms are right for its age, but I am looking for any real-world experiences.

As it will be up to dear old daddy to nag her to get it serviced, I am wondering what the chances are of getting the dreaded "the car has blown up" phone call...

BTW - the "blown up" statement can refer to anything from the radio not working, to smoke issuing out from under the bonnet, and everything in between...

Cheers.

Basil,

you can't go wrong with a Honda if it has lowish km and a good service history. imo they are th best vehicle manufacturer in japan. i have had a few and they are a a fantastic quality vehicle. they can be ruined though by idiot owners that don't service them and think they last forever.

get it checked for service history and loving care and attention and if all looks good then go for it.

As JC posted a very good vehicle but a broken gearbox will cost more to repair than what it's worth. Pat

Thanks Pat, I didn't get past the engine and normal servicing! Yes agree this is also an important factor, although one would assume trans servicing had been carried out.
My '92 4WS Accord EXi, I used to change auto trans oil every engine service, not a lot of oil and no filter had to be done so it got it every time. Apart from a CV failure which I discovered had been replaced with a rubbish unit before we bought it at 90,000km :o it was a joy to own and drive. I had 2 Civics prior, both easy to work on and impressive deign.

Thanks for that.

She is tossing up between the Civic, and a Ford Focus.

Being a Ford man, I dont mind the Focus, but I had one from work for a couple of weeks, and said at the time, that I would never buy one.

I found the vision out of it terrible, and it always seemed to be working hard. Even with gentle driving, I couldn't get it below 9.5l / 100kms.

The Civic has a published economy of just over 6l, so even with fudge factor, I would expect it to come in at around the low 8's.
