Engine Cowling

Getting closer to being ready for painting with lots of sanding, stripping and elbow grease. Just got the engine cowling to go before the front of the cab.
Besides the side gates being cut in half and the front bumper the engine cowling is probably the most beat up part. It appears to have had a big hit on the heater duct and the whole thing has been pulled out of shape.
I can straighten the cowling but the heater duct is going to be a challenge.
A few questions -
1. Has anyone got an unloved heater duct?
2. The latches on the front are stuffed and not original. They are not available as a spare any more, does anyone have any clues?
3. I have seen stuff at Clark rubber that might be suitable for the underside insulation. Was wondering if anyone has any good ideas for insulation and sound deadening?

On number three make sure anything you buy is rated to the temperatures you'll see under the cover or else it will likely fall off in no time.

I've heard good things about the Rare Spares sound proofing on other forums but never seen any installed first hand:

Ill be using something similar to these but not yet settled on which one so keen to hear about what ever product you go for.

edit* also if you cant find a heater hose they seem to be quite cheap from John Craddock although I imagine they are only a basic piece of corrugated hose which may be able to be picked up from Bunnings or the like??

On number 1 - sorry I cannot help as I do not have any - at all :(

On number 2 - I have exactly the same latches on my 101 so you sure they are not original. The Aust Army had their own non UK supplies for various bits when they failed and maybe the latches fall into this category. Take your fuel tank - it is the same as mine and is not UK original (these have indents on the side) but the Aust Army had their own tanks that they put on as the originals had issues - your tank is the same as mine and is genuine Aust Army but some Aust 101s may still have the original UK tanks.

On Number 3 - I checked out Clark Rubber but their stuff is not real good. I went to an insulation specialist and bought some hard fibreglass stuff - is rigid like a board and is about 2cm thick and is designed to insulate against heat and noise. It cuts with a stanley knife and I glued it to the underside of the cover and the gearbox cover and then glued the silver roof insulation material to protect the insulation - used aluminium tape to seal all the edges. That was in 2009 and the stuff under the engine cover is fine but oil being thrown out by the rear tfr case seal has made the gearbox cover insulation sag a bit but it is still there.

There are dedicated products such as Dynamat (The Official Dynamat Website (http://www.dynamat.com/)) but is quite expensive and what I used suits my needs.

My cover latches are not original.
Some better marine places have the correct sort of latch as per the british army.
If the latches you have work , why change ?
The heater duct pipe from the heater core to the engine cover is a special size and would be extremely hard to find,
AJ does have the correct pipe NOS at a good price.

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting to know the latches may be Oz issue.
Mine are not too bad but did work very well but with the cowling out of shape and no rubber seals at all I suppose to be expected.
I will see how they go once I have straightened it out.

Guess I will have to try panel beating my heater duct.

I have a new heater tube already, I think I got it from 101Club when I bought stuff from them some time ago

Heater duct are you on about eminox between the heater box and the channel on the engine cover?

I have a brand new second hand one as removed from the Ambo yesterday.
It's tig welded ali how did you root yours?
Price I will seek advice from the club, not being a **** but I should try and recoup what I can from the 101 parts to pay for the new stuff I need to purchase aftermarket, I have a heater matrix and the box that it sits in and the heater blower,when I get the engine out heater pipes!!
You could make me an offer if you want the lot :-)
