Hi All
Just wondering if anyone has come across a clunking sound from under the car ,so far only after being parked. At first I thought that it was a CV issue as it had only occurred when pulling out of the driveway (turning left) then it happened when driving driving in a straight line after being parked. I think it may be the handbrake not fully releasing and catching as the frequency of the noise is consistent with what the tails shaft speed would likely be. I think this would create some backlash through the transfer case and give the noise described.
If anyone has encountered this is there a common problem the handbrake mechanism or is it a case of pulling the drum of and checking for a problem internally.
Thanks

sounds like a draging brake shoe in an out of round drum, most likely from oil contamination, over adjustment, a sticking mechanism. But I'd be checking the Ujs and drive flanges.

A few years ago I had a funny noise under the car, also related to prop-shaft rotation.

Ended up being a piece of barbed wire that had got entangled around the UJ, and was slapping the body on every rotation.......

Get underneath and eyeball everything. Pull on the flanges and UJs. Nothing should move much.

Hopefully it's not inside the t-case or axle......

Could be the rubber "donut" universal between rear diff pinion shaft flange and rear tail shaft. look for signs of metal to metal contact on both 3 hole drive flange arms/bolts, the rubber can appear in reasonable condition when no load is on it but "screw up" badly under load i.e getting the vehicle moving initially.

I have similar clunk noises, and I suspect my A-frame ball joint. I'm replacing it in a few weeks time when I get my hands on a press. Outcome TBC then. :)

I have been able to locate the problem to the handbrake .It has done it once more since posting this thread and by very lightly applying the handbrake at walking speed the noise was louder.I stopped ,applied the handbrake then released it and the noise went away.
Looks like I need to look inside and see whats sticking.
