The fun never ends! Now i have a humming sort of noise coming from the front. It starts at ninety kays and stays there, put gearbox into neutral and engine revs drop, still there.Sounds like tyre or wind noise to me.Anyone got any ideas?

Wheel bearings? How many KM on it?

It has about 208 thou. on the clock.

Mine sounds like the wheel bearings are on the way out with just under 170KKM on the clock - not sure if you could describe it as a humming noise, but it may be. Jack one of the front wheels up and give it a spin - see if you can feel or hear anything unusual - not the normal disk brake noise you may get, but a deeper rumbling.
Worn wheel bearings usually make a fairly distinctive noise.

Still to try that, funny how it starts soon as the speedo hits 90.

yeah - Wheel Bearing first to check. Diff often sounds similar but the deapish droning/rumbling changes as the power is applied and goes away when power is removed (like most drive line noises). Wheel bearing noise stay constant. As Gav states it is a distictive sound, once you know it you can't miss it.
If its a higher humming - what are the tyres like? Easy to see if it changes after tyre rotate.

Mostly wheel bearings will last 500k - 1000k.
I'd be surprised to see a wheel bearing go at 208k unless the truck has hit some big pot holes, been in an accident or been submerged with faulty seals.
Not sure where you use your truck but I have had similar noises after a stick has lodged between the chassis and tyre or even between the chassis and drive shaft. Sometimes even a stone or rock can lodge and cause similar rubbing. Sometimes a pebble can lodge in the brake caliper rubbing against the rotor giving the noise you describe. Like I said it all depends where you drive. City driving rarely produces these things but us bushies experience all and sundry.
If after you have checked for any extraneous material the next checking method is to lift up each front wheel at a time and drive it to the equivalent speed - this will help diagnose which side or both sides etc.

Has it ever had the windscreen replaced? Every L322 I test drove which had a windscreen replaced at some time made some odd noises at different speeds. Mine gets a low thumping droning over about 120 and is different depending on if I pass a tall truck or a car. The windscreen places always seem to stuff up the trim.
Just an idea.

Good point! This reminds me that an incompletely shut sun roof window will also produce a constant speed linked humming noise unlinked to either motor or gear selection.
I've had my heated front windscreen ($2k+) replaced (with no noise symptoms) but they stuffed up the water seal so AAMI is about to pay for another one.

Is it a hum kinda like blowing paper over a comb?
We used to get a noise like that from the trim at the bottom of the windscreen on our old L322 from wind at certain speeds, fixed by running a small amount of sealant along under the edge.

You don't have a roof rack of any sort fitted do you? That's probably too obvious! :)
As these trucks are so quiet mechanically (when not accelerating) then (as most of the above posts are alluding to) the humming noise is most likely to be a wind induced harmonic. Even a front windscreen wiper that is out of the standard parking position will cause such humming. I've also noticed wind deflectors on driver's wipers fitted to some trucks and not others.

Hi there rangietragic,
When I bought my 2003 Rangie ten months ago, I test drove it mainly within city limits. When I drove it home after picking it up I had speed related noises over about 80kmh.
A Range Rover mechanic told me it was a front wheel bearing. He was a bit out of the way so I took it to a more local Range Rover mechanic and told him it was a wheel bearing. I picked it up, he told me the bearing was fine, that it was the tyres, and I should do a diagonal rotation so the wheels rotated the opposite way. I so didn't believe him!!
But, I did what he said. Problem solved. Noise gone.
The culprit......and apparently not at all unusual.......Goodyear Wranglers!!
Hope that helps.
Bob.
PS. AND...It didn't do it all the time. Depended on road surfaces and weather!! And sometimes louder than other times.

Thanks, havnt heard it for a couple of days now.Heers hoping!Further to my lack of power issue, changed fuel filter,no difference.Seems to only be when engine is cold.Wehave a bit of a hill about 400 mts from home,on reaching it at about 80or so,seems to have a flat spot, then takes off again.Tried it when engine was still a bit warm,no problem:confused:.Any one got any ideas?

I had my L322 windscreen replaced (well it was with the RWC)
and have the same problem, noise comes from the top middle I think,
taped the top of the screen to see if that was comming from there, but still buzzy. May be comming in under the top at the sides. Any ideas? The roof track trim does'nt seem to hold very well in the clips as it run down into the corners at the top of the windows.
Keep taping in sections? To find the problem? I Do'nt realy want to put sealent everywhere.

I drove over to Melbourne through last night, had a fair bit of wind noise on the wind screen :( but It was blowing a gale out so maybe its not too bad....

Some of the early delivery L322s (02-03) had issues with the sealant used on the windscreen. It didn't take in various places but the most common seem to have been the bottom of the screen.
I did the same thing with mine as bertness. Test drove it around the city but didn't get out into the open until later. Anything over about 80kmh with a slight cross wind and it sounded like a nest of angry hornets were about to come inside for revenge.
Checked around the screen and sure enough the bottom seal had started to lift. Spoke to the dealer, a quick run of Sikaflex along the seal and no more problem. That was three years back.
So, it's possible that your humming is caused in this manner. Remember there is actually a turbulent, high pressure concentration at the base of the windscreen so even a little bit loose will vibrate.
Hope that helps, and you isolate your humming soon (or at least teach it some lyrics :wasntme:)
Cheers,
Iain

Mine has been doing the same thing intermittently, so thanks to all for the thread - - I will go looking at the screen seal!!

Checked all the plastic trims in front? Lights? Grille? Once had a RRC grille that had a few broken supports- it "hummed"at around 80km then went away with increase speed. a little looseness can make strange noises.
I seem to hear a humming noise from my wife every time I mention buying something for RR! This relatively easy to diagnose and fix- new shoes, dine out, etc.

Remove the wranglers if they're fitted. They blow...
I assume its been in for its front shaft recall??

Easy to check. Stick your head under the car and have a look where the front drive shaft meets the diff. If there is a rubber donut there and a heat shield fitted, then the recall or the front diff has been done.

Call LR or any dealer and ask for a check on recall history will also provide you with that info.
I had my 2005 td6 front diff shaft done as a repair and then again some 6 moths later as a factory recall and it did not have any "rubber donut and heatshield" fitted on either occasion.

Just last week, I replaced my flogged out splined shaft .
Genuine part, new one has a CV joint at front diff.
Entailed replacing the diff pinion yoke and new shaft / CV joint assembly; bolted up to existing donut at T'fer case.
Not cheap at around $500 parts only, but better than just replacing the front diff splined yoke ( around $200) as the original shaft spline will usually be (mine was!) worn as well.

$500 for parts - that sounds very cheap actually!
Did you try putting it to LR to repair?
My repair (towing 850 km on tilt tray truck, hotel accommodation, rental car etc) was all paid for my LR outside warranty as was the second job as a recall.

This car had obviously missed the recall and looking at other things on it possibly all due to slack maintenance/servicing.
And no service history supplied with the car.
I asked at MR automotive, Redcliffe, when they checked the car on the hoist (after I'd bought it and drove it back from Melbourne the same day!) .
They suggested that its too "long in the tooth" to get warranty; ie 9 years old and 250,000km.
They sold me all the parts-- a "kit". They offered to fit it for around $400.
Did it myself- 1/2 a day.
I wouldn't trust the local dealer anyhow! I hear lots sorry tales.
