How can I identify whether my Series III was originally a 4 or 6 cylinder? I need to know for ordering some parts and it came with no books or papers about previous repairs/engine conversions.
Cheers,
Kyle.

Punch the chassis number into CalVIN "LR vin" calculator. Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands (http://www.clifton.nl/)

The firewall sits further back around the transmission tunnel on the 6 cyl. If you post up a pic of the inside showing the tunnel, someone should be able to help you. 4 cyls were very common in civilian S3's.

Cheers Lotz-A-Landies. I punched in the chassis number and it tells me that my Series III was originally a 6 Cylinder model.

I typed in my VIN and it didn't say anyhting about what engine it had except it said it was a petrol. It said mine was a CKD right hand drive so it was put together in Australia. every detail was right but no mention of what engine, 4cyl or 6cyl. How interesting it is to find out more about your own Landy.

I seem to remember it tells you if it is not a four cylinder petrol, but it is possible that this depends on what year/model it is - in other words, the data it accesses is almost certainly not complete.

Hello Goosey,
I just measured the difference between the vertical face of the transmission tunnel where it steps down off the firewall to the vertical face of the seat box in my 4 cylinder and my 6 cylinder Series 3 Long wheel base vehicles. The distance in the 4 cylinder is 300 mm and in the 6 cylinder it was 235-240.
I have attached a quick diagram of where I took the measurements from - I would have taken a photo, however I can't find where the camera is at the moment.
I hope this lets you work out whether you had a 4 or a 6 originally fitted.
Kind Regards
Lionel

G'day Goosey,
I used my mobile phone instead of the camera so my apologies for the quality of the shots. The photos are taken using a 300 mm square, which just fits. The photo was taken of the distance between the step on the firewall to the seat box on my 4 cylinder engine.
Kind Regards
Lionel

often if a holden 6 replaced the OEM 6 there was no need to mod the front cross memeber, if the front cross member is modded it was most likely originally a 4 pot.

So Goosey,
Did you get to measure the distance between the seat box and the firewall to find out if the vehicle was originally fitted with a 4 or a 6 cylinder motor? If so what was it? :)
Kind Regards
Lionel
