does anyone know if the puma still uses the lt230 transfer case?

Yes it does. Its been rotated round a bit and runs a 1.2 ratio as opposed to 1.4 in the earlier Defenders

IIRC it also has a spacer between it & the main gearbox.

Interesting setup, i am trying to work out if a puma lt230 can be swapped out with an earlier model one, i have some concerns over excessive backlash in mine which LR assure me is normal, so if it goes fails on me on a trip i want to know if i can swap it out easily in a hurry. Any know if they are interchangeable with the earlier ones?

So for us less knowledgable, what's the differance in boof head terms.

Jason, High range ratio is about roughly 20% higher then and pre 07 defender - its the same ratio as D1's and D2's. But because of the puma 6 speed gearbox, 1st gear is still lower ratio then the earlier defenders.

As for low range ratio in the transfer is pretty much the same -



LT230 Ratios -
Puma
High range transfer box ratio 1.211
Low range transfer box ratio 3.269

Discovery
High range transfer box ratio 1.22
Low range transfer box ratio 3.32

Pre 07 Defender
High range transfer box ratio 1.41
Low range transfer box ratio 3.32
