plenty of room for me +the SWMBO and for a while Alex untill he was about 4 and decided to adopt SWMBO's matress estate hogging sleeping patterns.

I have a oztrail mitchell in dbl size has the middle support as well so water doesnt pool. Mine also has the new alloy poles they seem to be a bit better than fiberglass. I was out at hamblton last week heavey rain and high winds no problem and no a drop of water inside takes about 3 min to set up. With the flaps over each end you can have some air flow even when its raining.

Amazon Outdoors - OZtrail Mitchell Double Swag (OZTCSW-MITD-D) (http://www.amazonoutdoors.com.au/Product/Products/Camping-Gear/Swags/OZtrail-Mitchell-Double-Swag)

You can get them from about $350 on ebay:)

I have to give a huge thumbs up for Saul's swags.

I've bought 2 in the last few years, a single and a double. They are a basic but VERY weatherproof design with no fancy hoops, screens etc. Very well made and comfortable.

The price is also very reasonable given it is still made in Australia.

Ordering was simple, an e-mail of enquiry followed by an e-mail of confirmation and they were sent COD. Picked up and paid for them at the Post Office.

Hi Baz.

Just been through the same exercise and ended up with Vagabond :Sahara Swags (http://www.saharaswags.com.au/vagabond.html) . Nice thick mattress as well for our backs ;)

From talking with a couple of swag users up here they recommended an open foot screen as well to minimise condensation from 2 bods in the swag, especially on cold nights. Also helps with ventilation on hotter nights.

Only mod I'm looking to do is run a spreader bar from top loop to the bottom one to make the swag free standing.

I have one of these Onland numbers, although in a one-man size.

Things I like about it:

It's roomy and airy
It's very warm and comfortable to sleep in
It fends off the rain really well
It comes in it's own bag which is great for packing it away when wet
You can get into it from the top or from the front door
The mozzie net parts are of top quality
The zips are robust and solid
It's solid canvas - nice and heard-wearing
It's quick to erect and to put away
It can be used without the poles perfectly well...on a dry night!
Things I dislike about it:

The seams needed a good initial dousing to waterproof them
You need to set it up really well if it's going to be a wet night and it needs to be nice and taut.
The top velcro flap is a bit annoying to fit once you're in it - needs to be done before you get in. Even then it occasionally leaves wee gaps so if it's windy and rainy, the odd drip could work its way in (hasn't happened to me yet)
The centre pole velcro stays aren't as strong as they could be. If you're a wriggler, you might dislodge one. N.B. I don't know what the setup is on the queen size
The way the poles fit the foot part is nothing short of silly. Why they're different to the big hoop at the front is quite beyond me.
The pole sections should be attached to each other with elastics.
That's about it. I love mine. Tough and rugged. Comfy. If I spend a night on a particularly stony bit of ground, I'll use a sleeping mat as well but that's because I'm soft. In truth, I rarely need it.

Hope this helps

Baz, We have had a King Size Saul Swag for over 15 years and we are very happy with it.

We contacted Saul and explained we needed a longer and wider swag, as Sheila & I are both quite tall. They made a King size one for us and it's big enough for us.

Give them a call and see if they can make a larger one for you.

What about Mr Swagman?

Swag products Australia - Aussie Swags by Mr Swagman - Australian Camping and Gear - Bush Swags Bed rolls - Camping Bed - Campout Products (http://www.mrswagman.com.au/premium-deluxe.shtml)

I know they are not cheap but this one looks good for any season etc, I plan on getting some for trips where it is just me and my two young boys.

It can be used as a mosquito net in the hotter times or a zip it up for full protection.

I also spoke to them about doing a custom size for a rooftop tent, they may be able to do a specific size for a swag if needed.

In 2000 I bought a 4WD Outback swag from annaconda. It was reasonably cheap $165, it was light with strong zips. I didnt expect too much but it has served me well with no rips tears or breakages and has an extremely comfortable hi density matteress . I have now slept hundreds of nights in it. It had 3 sets of hoops but I tossed the centre ones away. Durable? yes. Rugged? guess so. Comfortable? yes. and it is completely insect proof with heaps of ventilation if you want it. It even has security tabs inside which can stop your drunken mates from unzipping it in the middle of the night, internal pockets for keys/torches/phones. I got ****canned by mates initially for its size rolled up but no one says anything any more....its good gear.

What I like about SFTH, is the weight. Swag with it's built in foam mat, plus thermarest plus double doona is still <5kg (and about 20" across rolled). Compared to my original canvas at about 30" across when rolled, and over 20kg. Also has built in straps for carrying as a backpack.

I can highly recommend for anyone wanting a single travel swag. Only thing I don't like is the flaps fold over in the opposite way I'm used to.

It's amazing how many of these supposed Australian made swags, are not, once you start chatting to the company owners, you soon find out that they are actually designed here but made in China, Fiji or India:mad:

There are exceptions Snowy Mountain Company, Panorama, Sauls, Southern Cross, Mr Swagman, there is a New Zealand maker, but for the life of me, I cannot find them.

Our heart says Australian(New Zealand) made but the wallet says others:(

Still deciding, thanks for all the advice so far.

Found a few that were "made in Australia" but only found 2 that used local canvas manufactures (rest mostly Chinese) and having a brain fart trying to remember then just know they were out of my price range.

I've got one of these and agree with all comments, even the ragging from mates. Zips are very substantial.

Current RRP is $350 but they are about $200 when on special.

The centre hoop is a bit of a pain to put in and is not really necessary. If I'm staying put for a few nights I'll use it, otherwise not.

The day I bought it I set it up on a veranda and got in to see if it would be claustrophobic or stuffy (never had a swag before) and promptly fell asleep for 3 hours.

I have a number of 1,2 and 3 man tents yet this now gets used more than half the time, especially when working out in the sticks (fish surveys).

cheers, DL

So, to those in the know ... What's warmer in cold weather .... a basic swag like a Saul (with good woolen blanket) laid out on a tarp, or something like the Oz Mitchell with a sleeping bag ? Having never used one, one reads stuff online, and some say the airspace in a dome type won't keep you as warm as a close fitted tradition type swag that's more like being in a sleeping bag ... ??? The simplicity of the Saul or SFTH types appeals .... Throw it down last minute, crawl in and sleep (and if it's wet most times it will be under the foxwing awning) ,plus it can be used easily indoors, or on a verandah, etc ...

Mrs F says a big NO to a swag for her accom's (even though she's never tried one - she's the RV-5 & queen double height air mattress, which by my reckoning is really comfortable) but for 1-2 nighters just for me, a quick simple swag has some appeal. Have a Malamoo 3 sec tent, but then it requires an air mattress (so that means an electric air pump), then a sleeping bag ..... ?

Like Baz's said ... Too many choices :)

Seems many here have given the Saul good wrap (scuse' the pun), but what about insect screening ? Yes, Saul has a separate mozzie net (how hard is it to keep the net in place as you're climbing into the swag ? I can live with the insects issue using a separate net when required.

I'm leaning towards a Saul (the SFTH one would be better with a thicker mattress ... Add a mattress and it's the same $ as a Saul)

... or for about the same $ I can get a double Mitchell and encourage the handbrake to try swagging ... and if that's a blue duck, then I'm swagging in luxury with a little more setup time. I see what a lot of people say .... A dome swag is basically a mini tent ... Not a swag ... And we already have a RV-5 which I reckon would take about the same time to setup as a Mitchell for a quick overnighter ....

Speak up people ! :p

Sorry 'bout the hijack Baz.

i dont see the point in using a sleeping bag in a swag, sheets, blankets, donnas, pillows are the go. you have all the room of a swag than you restrict yourself in a sleeping bag

i have only ever used flat swags over the last 20 years with no mozzie nets and reckon i can regulate the temp better than a sleeping bag by always having sheets, blanket and doona. the temp depicts how many layers, the layers that are no required go under the mattress for extra padding. insect control can be a problem for this reason i am keen to get a custom double swag made as i have tested my mates and i recon its the go.

the biggest problem with swags is the room they take up, esp. when you have four up on the roof rack.

I had a good look at the ARB Skydome single today .... Looks to be a nice peice of gear. Canvas is very heavy weight. Mattress is good with a cover that's heavier than just a cotton sheet style cover. Plenty of room inside with a few places to stash bits and hang pieces, and it has a nifty pocket to hang yer 'kubra hat out of harms way (accessible from inside or outside).

Has a bucket floor with high sides, and is free standing (using two long spreader poles inserted between the three hoops). The top unzips only a bit more than half way across. Has mesh both ends with a flap for some weather protection. It's free standing due to the poles arrangement.

The ends of the hoops & spreader poles have a little pin in them, smaller diameter than the pole, which locate into brass eyelets in the six tent peg tabs attached to the bucket floor .... Looks like a simple method of getting it together, but many moons ago we had a nylon dome tent that used poles with little pins on the ends like this, and the pins eventually break off the end of the pole, and then you can't make the end of the pole stay where it's supposed to ..... I don't like the look of the pins. They are very small and I just know they will eventually break, making the Skydome impossible to erect .... Also uses the same pins in the ends of the spreader bars. Hmmmmm ......

Apart from the silly pins, it looks good. Would I pay $395 for one ? Don't know (haven't look at enough of the competition in the flesh to have a well informed opinion) ... But it looks good quality and quiet substantial. Rolled up would be around 900 long and about 300-350 in diameter ... Setup about 2.1 x 0.9 x .85 high (plenty of headroom)

It's a spacious mini-tent ! :p

I asked the sales person how long it took to put up (it was only put up this morning) .... About 3 minutes he said ... I reckon 3 - 5 minutes without booze on board :p ... My oztent goes up quicker for a basic overnighter.

X2 that the canvas layers of a basic swag add warmth. I have never used more than 2 blankets in my 30 years of swagging :)

I also have to agree that using a sleeping bag in a swag kind of defeats the purpose. I much prefer having a close to normal bed with sheets etc.

As for insects I just throw a flap over my face. usually when the sun comes up as well.

Cheers

My canvas swag only had a 2" old foam mattress, a woollen (genuine prison issue grey) blanket for under and a $20- woolworths doona on top.

The new one has a high density foam mattress with a silver foil insulation layer adhered to it on the underside, I have added a thermarest over that. From there just adding same blanket under and doona over. But will be bringing the bag for the first use just in case.

My record coldest was -12 in just the bag. But it's one hell of a bag, custom goretex outer, gore treated 100% goose down (even selected the down myself). Record for the swag was a night in kangaroo valley that froze the toothpaste.

Though I'd make the swag free standing for those times on hard ground etc.

If you are looking to do the same you'll need 11mm+ diameter fibreglass poles (any thinner and aren't rigid enough for the tension) If you have a single swag you might be able to get away with smaller diameter.

Check with your camping stores to see if they have loose poles, these cost me $1 each. Also grabbed a couple extra to hold up the head flap.

Also used to small "C" end pole parts trimmed down to cup the loops on the swag and pieces of aluminium bar to create the pins... easy to file.

All up the mod cost about $10...:)

As always here are some pics...

My Saul arrived today. Very nice piece or work! The blanket is of good quality. Lighter than I expected and pretty compact. I'm very pleased :)

Also turned up was an AOS SPS in a double size (Swag Protection System). Cheapest was from Snowys in SA, then tonight Wild Earth have them on EBay reduced from 119.50 + postage to $107 including postage ... Figures!

The SPS is a nice way to protect the Saul when on the roof, rolls out to be a 3/4 groundsheet, and has more diameter and length than needed so I can add an extra blanket, and/or a thermarest, and even some clothing or towels, and only have to roll it up loosely, with a bit of space in the end of the bag for a pillow and mozzie net and bits and pieces.

Really looking forward to using it.

So, how do you Saul guys make up your bedding ? How do you assemble, or layer your bedding ? This is a bit new to me. Sheets, blankets ... ?

Last time I used it, I just chucked in an old sleeping bag (rotten things they are) and pillow........ I think it's still in there.

Didn't get the wool blanket at the time, partly because I'm a tightwad, and partly due to the fact that anything woolen used to make me itch like a mongrel.

Doesn't seem to affect me too much now, so I might pick one up later, and grab a cheap doona for that bit of "home comfort".

I did find the Saul to be a bit stiff at first, and was like laying in between sheets of cardboard. I'm hoping it'll loosen up a bit with use.

Kev,

I just make it up like a normal bed and then roll it up. If a bit colder than normal I'll fold one blanket in half. Nothing fancy.

And yes the canvas will soften with use :)

I have a Burke and Wills Simpson , without a doubt the best swag ever!
Used to use the Onland .... leaked like a shower spent heaps of time water proofing it ... zips fell apart twice ... got heavy duty YKK sown in... now that it's all fixed our daughter uses it.

Still can only recommend the Simpson 100%
I use feather down doona in it and never get cold or uncomfortable .

Another vote for Sauls. We bought two very basic singles about 10 years ago and they've been flogged all around the country with the boys disappearing on surfing trips and sleeping on the beach and so on. They're still as good as new. We just chuck sleeping bags and pillows in. Our bags have an extra removable cover for really cold nights. So good Aussie canvas and fittings is worth the money.

I was ALMOST convinced to get one of these:

A TUSKER Razorback

or
SAHARA Rover

but now I am leaning towards the good old SAUL swag... thanks for getting me more confused than before

To follow on from a previous post: A write up today in the West newspaper. It does not say where ARB are having them made, so may not be Australian, but they do mention some pertinent points.

They are made in China.

... and when I asked could I buy one (ARB Newcastle) I was told at least 5-6 weeks wait ... :(

They had one on display. It does look good. Canvas is heavy enough, and the extra touches are nice, and there's plenty of room.

If you're in the market for a "mini-tent" :wasntme: you should seriously consider one.

My 0.02c :)

Swag turned up today, after a bit of a debacle with the couriers sub contractor, who just couldn't be bothered delivering it because the instructions were to complicated apparently:o

"If knowone is home and you require a signature, go next door to No xx"

Extremely hard instructions to follow:o

Well it's big:eek: bloody huge more like it, I'll open it up this arvo and fill it with all the suff we need, sheets, blankets and doona, I hope the reputation is as good as they reckon they are, so one Burke & Wills Redgum double is here, just in time for Belanglo:D

Opened it up last night and put all the bedding in, sheets and a doona, huge is an understatement, very comfy mattress, 75mm conforluted foam(egg shell)plenty of room inside for me and the missus, opens all the way to the bottom, has ventilation at both ends, the top end has miles of room to get in and out and has a flap that doubles as an awning.

Easier to put up and bring down than I thought it would be, tough to roll up with the extra bedding though, it's amazing how well insulated they are, just getting into it you can feel the difference from the outside temp, a lot warmer insde the swag even without pulling the sheets and doona over, overall very happy so far.

Belanglo here we come:D
