Out of interest has anyone done much towing with a van over or around 2.5 ton with their Puma?

And if so how is it?

I know they have a restricted ball weight of no more then 250 kg but that's not the question rather how good are they at towing a decent sized van.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Terry

I have a 2008 Tdci(PUMA) and a 5.1m Coromal Off Road pop-top. Dry weight is about 1750kg, loaded for a trip with water food etc I would estimate 2200kg.

It tows quite well, will maintain 100k's at about 13.5L/100k's. On hills you find you need to go back to 5 th so as not strain the running gear.

You do need to watch the road/speed/revs to keep up road speed and not strain the vehicle.

I would not tow any thing heavier for any substantial distance, I think this size van is at at it's comfortable limit.

Cheers

From my experience anything less than 3l starts to lag with anything over 2.5 tonne. The vehicles will do it but not happily.

I tow a full size caravan with a weight of around 2.6 tonnes, I havn't had any trouble so far, this included around Tassie for four months. Have been towing with it since buying the truck 2 1/2 years ago. The tow ball weight limitt on mine is 350 kgs, which is a genuine land rover tow bar. we will be heading off again soon with it, on a main highway I can sit on 100kph no problems, although I try and stay around 85 to 90 kph. I keep the engine revs around 2000 rpm which keeps me in 5 or 6 gear. This is the way I drive mine, but it might not suit everyone. If you need any more info p.m. me.

This is the biggest thing i have towed with my puma
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/09/1375.jpg
It did it very well, even with the 33s, there wasn't much up hill though what there was it wasnt a struggle at all for it, i dont know if it would be the same with a 2.2 though from some of the things i have heard so far about them.

longest towing run i have ever done is this to Fraser island(newcastle->Fraser->Newcastle), we were fairly heavily loaded and my brother in law with his TDI disco(my old one) with some mods couldn't keep up with us on the hills and he wasnt towing anything.

Mind you mine has a few "tweaks" to help out....

I tow a 21 foot van with my 2011 90 Puma.. the van weighs in at 2660kgs (empty) and it generally stays empty when I am pulling it apart from water (2 x 85 litres) as I am merely transporting the vans to shows... It pulls it alright, doesn't struggle too much on hills and is able to quickly pick up speed after take off.. but I wouldn't recommend it for long term touring as I am always worried that if something did go wrong then the weight of the van would easily pull the car into a dangerous situation.. I would prefer something a little larger if I was to be towing that size and weight all the time.. :)

I towed my cub camper loaded with the defender loaded also from Sydney to Newman and it towed fine,it's no rocketship but it had no trouble overtaking the bicky dippers in thier 200 series and doesn't burn oil to boot,I'd go a D3/4 as a first choice but as there is a defender in the driveway now I wouldn't sell it to change. Now that my friend is the quote of the day.:D Last trip we did we were stuck behind such a very nice couple on are way into Yunta, old mate was travelling at 75kph and sticking slap bang in the middle of the road unless the road trains were coming then he'd move over to the left, then immediately back to the middle, he wasn't letting us young whipper snappers overtake him in his king of the road and oversized and priced portaloo. We eventually got by them at the inspection station as he was arguing at getting his 10kg bag of spuds turfed into the bin.

All I had to declare was that my wife was blonde

The only thing I would consider would be is the EGT, not that I am saying that there would be a problem. I'm beging to beleive ( after driving Tojo's at work) that with diesels these day's capacity is n"t the issue.:D

So no one uses or feels the need to use a WDH when towing heavy loads with a Puma/ Defender?

No,never even thought about it.IMHO WDH are nothing but a bandaid solution for poor suspension, poor vehicle design, overloading, poor wieght placement, poor driving, lack of driving skill, following advise from keyboard experts on ExplorOz,Caravan World,Bicky Dipper weekly,Grey Nomad monthly etc etc. Pat
