If one was interested in picking up a unit, getting a license and learning how to use it, what's the best option/s?

Not looking to be an enthusiast, just keen to have one and know how to use it. ;)

Depends on what you want to do with it,as to what sort of radio ie UHF, VHF, HF.Then it comes down to how much you want to spend?
Then do you want it for home or in a vehicle.
I had a Full Call Amateur License for 30years back in the halcyon days of radio:cool:The onset of the digital age took a lot of the people and a lot of the fun associated with voice communication away:(
I let my call lapse and never went back,although I still have a 70cm hand held here,and a 3 element HF Tri Bander sitting on the roof:p
These days it is easy to go and get a "Foundation" license,and although power output is limited.some fun can be had with making contact on low power.
I was also one of the first to have C.B in the country,a long time before they became legal,and also spent time in Comms in the military.
It is still probably in my blood,and I often think ,I should put a HF radio in the truck,then I wake up to myself,and think that it would probably shake itself apart in my old truck.
Do it I say,it can open up the world in a much different way,than the computer age.
And the best way to get involved is to look up a local amateur radio club near you,and go along to a meeting or open day,and have a go!!!!!!

If you are interested, I have a Kenwood TS50s which I took out of my Range Rover 2 years ago and have not used since. I also have an LDG RT11 auto tuner, Terlin Outbacker and Survivor antenna and a Jenal microphone that needs the plug changed to suit the Kenwood radio. I also have a 4:1 balun. The radio has had almost no use but does have a small scratch on the lhs of the face. The radio will do all you want from an hf radio. I dont have the spring mount for the antenna, well I did but cant find it since I cleaned out the garage. I dont have the box for the radio any more.
I was going to get my licence but have lost interest and also have bought a Barrett 950 that I was able to get at a very good price. I also bought a Sat phone. Just too many toys.
