I have got to change the brake fluid in my car - LR Spec is Shell DONAX YB Dot 4 ESL or if not available Low Viscosity DOT 4 meeting ISO 4925 Class 6.

Can any one translate what that means in terms of branded brake fluid I can buy at Supercheap or Repco.

How much will I need for a full fluid change 1 - 1.5l ????

Thanks

Garry, try the Shell Ultra, here is the link to the tech. There is also a designated ESL DOT4 too.

Thanks JC just spent the last 90 minutes driving around the southern areas of Canberra looking for brake fluid.

Visited Supercheap, Repco, Autopro and the local Shell garages.

Shell garages only sell basic Dot 3 and Dot 4. The others sell their home brands, Castrol, PBR, Nulon, Penrite and all are a lower spec or full specs are not listed.

Unless someone has a common alternative I will postpone this fluid change and chase it up during the week. While we have a Castrol depot I don't believe we have a local Shell depot so will have to call Shell during working hours to find who stocks the relevant Shell fluids.

Spent another couple of hours chasing up brake fluid this morning - plenty of Dot 4 and most brake places said that if my car was in getting brake work done they would just put in normal Dot 4 fluid in.

Anyway I ended up the dealer as a last resort as the previous dealer would not sell "consumables" unless the car was being serviced - different now.

I was able to buy the correct Landrover Brake Fluid for $19 a litre and that is a very reasonable price - higher spec Dot 4 sells for $9-$13 for 500ml in the shops like Repco so the dealer price is not too bad.

Cheers

Thanks for the link JC.

I was going to suggest Castrol Response Super Dot 4 which I've used for years and has a very high BP for a 'normal' car fluid, (ie. anything other than SRF) but the viscosity is much higher than the ESL fluids ;)

I went to the Castrol Depot - Castrol do not have a brake fluid suitable for a RRS/D3. (or at least one that meets specs)

Shell advise that Shell Brake and Clutch Fluid Dot 4 Super is a suitable alternative to Shell DONAX YB Dot 4 ESL, Low Viscosity DOT 4 meeting ISO 4925 Class 6 or Shell Ultra.

For Canberra/Goulburn people they also advise that Shell lubricants/fluids are distributed by Blackwoods in Fyshwick, Neumann Petroleum at 1 Bass St Queanbeyan and Elders Pty Ltd 13/19 Verner St Goulburn.
