View Full Version : Where's the Good OL Wave

Dockstrada

Hi all I have recently returned to the Land Rover family from a long brake and have noticed the good ol Land Rover wave is gone.
I have crossed paths with many Defender drivers in the past week and I noticed most of them have a bit of hesitation towards lifting the hand off the wheel for a wave, it’s only until they see me giving them the wave that they return the gesture.
I always thought it was a given that there was a Defender wave, maybe I just look like a crazy guy waving at everyone.

So if you see an ugly crazy guy in a SVX waving like a mad man, don’t be shy .:spudnikwaving:

Just back from a week away in our series three shorty and got plenty of waves and smiles from fellow Land Rover drivers!
It was great to see!

Cheers, Mick.

I don't notice many waves in the Deefer but when I'm in the old Series 2a I've been amazed at the enthusiasm of some waves! Even once saw a guy virtually climb out the window to wave vigorously from his boringdoor wagon:D. On the 2-way I've heard truckers start talking about the old Landy their old man had when they were kids, so I jump in and say g'day:cool:.

I wonder sometimes whether it's the speed you're travelling at that determines whether you get the chance to wave or get a chance to see someone else wave. In the Series you see all the waves (max 90kph), in the Deefer you see some waves (max 130kph), in a Disco you see the odd wave (max 150kph), in the Rangie you don't see waves (max?? What max?).:p

Series/90/110/127/130/Tdi/TD5 drivers don't wave to TDCi's because TDCi drivers don't wave.

I certainly get more waves now, after the lift, bar, spotties, etc.
Got a wave from a friends mum in a grey 90 this arvo
I think the P plates make some wary, they probably think I'm just driving daddy's car
Oddly enough, I've had more waves from disco drivers, seemed to get snobbed by Deefers :p

I don't wave but I give other Deefer drivers the thumbs up.
I even wave to them when driving my ford.
My boys are always on the lookout for a deefer.

Here's waving at ya:D

Got plenty of waves over the W/E driving the Puma (around the Snowies).

I only go the country-style finger off the steering wheel but some go seem to go the full crazy-hands/oh **** the windscreens about to shatter approach.

Nothing from the Disco Stu crowd though. Worried about spilling their lattes I reckon...

Yeah, I've found the same thing. Puma drivers in general don't wave.

I still wave to all Defenders, and Series, but don't often get a return wave from Puma's, they're almost as bad as Disco's.
Soccer mum's must be driving them these days :wasntme:

I have a Puma and can normally be found waving furiously and with my arm out of the window at anybody in a Series or a Defender....doing my bit to encourage it in everyone but I guess some people just don't know about it....yet.

I passed a Puma driver the other day, waved and he waved back - his facial expression and wave were classic - both silently suggesting "Yep, I bought a leaky car too mate."

I think TD5 drivers give the best wave.
On the weekend I was on my property near the fence in Henry
when another TD5 beeps his horn and gives me a big wave as he drives by.
I have done the beeping thing as well, if I am driving and see a Deefer in the servo filling up I always give a beep and a wave , and usually get a return wave.
Well done Defender drivers.
Isn't it good to belong to the "I know what you are going through but would not change it for anything in the world club"

So just took delivery of our MY2012 110 last week. I think my wife was slightly sceptical about the wave thing at first, but now she's really into it and seems to be driving the new Land Rover more than I am

Certainly the wave seems to be more popular with drivers of older or more traditional style vehicles, and those with a genuine enthusiasm for the brand. I reckon the wave is alive and well in the Top End :BigThumb:

Passed a SIII LWB on the way back from uni today.
Either didn't see my arm out the window waving or the bugger snobbed me :p

The wave seems to be good and healthy over here in the West...

You do get the odd confused look of some chaps driving a brand new Puma, but I honestly think its an education thing rather than a snub. Land Rover culture seems to struggle a bit in general in Oz, especially off new converts.

SWMBO drives our Puma 90 most of the time and she actually keeps score of non-wavers in case we know them off the forum!:D Name and shame time on the WA-AULROIANS' "spotted" section!:wasntme:

I know where the OP is coming from,
I always get a return wave when I'm in in Vic,
I'm slumming it in Vauclause this week, I'm really suprised how many Defenders there are around here, but NOT ONE return wave, and that White 90 Td5 - you are really letting the side down. Probably a case of snobbery in these parts I think. Cant wait to get back to reality.

the only place I have not noticed a wave was on a recent trip to the Simpson. All the Defenders we came across (including Pumas) stopped for a chat instead.

I wave a defenders + series whoever I spot early enough. I have stopped waving at disco's- reckon I've had 40-50 unreturned waves.

I have a 110 owner living close by and kids at same school and feel our 2-a day wave is bordering on ? Not sure what but makes me laugh I suppose. Any protocol on this proximity issues?! :$

Tdci drivers don't wave because they are busy changing the CD. Maybe fine tuning the air con.

:p

Now Jason, stop stirring, you know that isn't true as Tdi and TD5 drivers have huuuge vents under the windscreen to let the air in :p

After several years of reading I've finally learnt how to play the game.

Actually just spotting another series or defender is half the problem, dam traffic can be that thick and unpredictable these days it's hard to take the eyes of what's infront of you.

if your general driving technique is not so laid back you dont have plenty of time to look around and enjoy the scenery you probably dont be long in a landy.

Dave, I'm slow, I am amazed how many people have almost run into the back of me leaving the lights. I always seem to be the bloke with several car lengths in front of me only to have it filled by some texting teen who doesn't indicate.

To Land Rover wave givers and to those that do not giveth the wave.

I was recently in the South East corner of Queensland with my 110 to pop in and see Mark Pearson and the troops at ARB Coopers Plains. During my time in the South East I was shocked at the absolute lack of a reciprocated wave from other Land Rover owners. Not once did I receive a wave in return from my southern Land Rover owner (no Defenders or Series Land Rovers spotted) brothers ad sisters.

So disheartened by this fact I decided to take a walk along Boundary Rd, Coopers Plain and ponder this troubling turn of events whilst waiting to pick up my 110. It was during my wanderings that I spied an immaculate Disco 2 (white in colour) heading towards me and I automatically put my hand up and gave a wave. Admittedly I was not in my Land Rover, if only I had a camera to capture the absolute look of disdain that the driver sprang my way. I immediately forgave the chap driving for their misgiving, only because they were sporting a lovely paisley shirt.

Broken hearted from the lack of love towards a fellow Land Rover owner I escaped the big smoke for my travel home to the great North West. Again I spotted plenty of Discos and Rangies. Plenty of waves coming from my 110, nil coming in return.

I didn't see any Landies or Rangies after Dalby, until I was about 20 kms south of Blackall. Coming out of a rest area was a brand new Range Rover, firenze red in colour and lovely. Not expecting anything in return I only gave a quick hand flick from the steering wheel in acknowledgement. To my absolute surprise and appreciation the lady driver gave me the full hand off the steering wheel wave in reply. I was suddenly grinning from ear to ear.

The journey continued with no other Landies spotted till I was north of Winton. This time I passed a white Disco 4 and what a wave I got from him. The full four fingers and the thumb spread wide and palm up high for the world to see a wave towards a fellow Land Rover owner. Now I was giggling like a school kid because my faith has been restored.

Come on SE Qld give up a wave for your fellow Landie/Rangie owners. It doesn't cost you anything but you will receive a smile for free.

Cheers,

Danial.

P.S. Big, big thanks for Mark and the ARB Coopers Plains boys. So refreshing to find customer service that actually is customer service and professionals that care about the job they do on your rig.

in the Deefer you see some waves (max 130kph)
It's amazing how fast you can go with a Defender speedometer.

If the SVX with an ugly crazy guy waving like a madman has a rooftop tent on it, it's probably me.

I have a HSV Calais. No one waves at me. Politely, anyway.

Saturday evening in the Landy, I was off to Wombat with a pizza, and a fellow in a dark green 110 waved at me. I waved back, of course.
