Hi all,
So here we are making our way north in WA having a wow of a time in our newish 90 (26,000 ks under his belt) towing our camper trailer around and I'm a bit concerned at some of the noises comming from the engine bay.

Firstly there is a rattly pump noise at a specific rpm (1750) and again at 2600rpm which fades in then disappears abruptly just after theses rpm's as you accelerate through them or decelerate. It is a faint noise but is defiantly noticeable. My thought is the injector pump but I'm not really sure. Any opinions? While in for a service in Perth I mentioned it and they said they reprogrammed the pump but it didn't make and difference and we kept moving.

Secondly and this has only become apparent today, there is a noise that sounds like a slipping belt as for example the Aircon engaging but happens when you shut the engine down and in the few seconds once the engine stops it makes the noise three times in a row almost like a blow off valve. I've heard a noise on shut down since I bought the car but always thought it was a normal sound but it has now changed. It also does it at low rpm almost under idle when taking off or changing gears. Any thoughts on this?

At the moment we are in Port Headland and on our way to Broome tomorrow were there is a dealer that can hopefully have a look at it. Thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts.

Cheers Lucas.

For the first noise, check the turbo heat shield bolts are all in place.

For the second noise, that will be your EGR valve. Get the dealer to look at it.

Cheers,

Tim

Lucas,

Just keep in mind that Shinju Motors in Broome is only an authorised service centre (actually a Ford dealer that sell KIA and Nissan) and they most probably won't have parts in stock.

I agree with Tim on his diagnoses, but if that EGR is an issue you might need to spend a day or two extra in Broome...

Good luck regardless and hope you have a good trip!

Cheers,

Lou

Had a similar sound in my 2011 130, rattles at certain RPM which was the turbo heat shield, they had rattled loose and lost bolts, it also started to crack, i was able to get the rattle to stop by bending it a little but LR recently replaced it under warranty.

Cheers for the advice, much appreciated!

Had the D9 in at Shinju motors today and yes they have told me it is the motor that operates the EGR valve that is packing it in... But yes of course parts come from the east so it could be a couple of weeks to fix it. I'm thinking we will keep moving through to Darwin, eventually, and get it sorted there. To me it seems it isn't a terminal problem and might be ok for another couple of thousand ks? Although what do you guys think? Broome is a nice spot so I don't really mind if I have to hang around for while longer

Cheers Lucas.

Yes you will be fine to continue driving, however the part takes less than 30 mins to fit, and all Land Rover parts which are not kept in stock by the dealer are sent via TNT priority air freight from Melbourne, so it should only be 2 - 3 days max.

Hi Lucas

Just a heads up from along the track -in my view the Darwin LR service department is not up to much. Yes, its described as a full dealership but basically they use the Mitsubishi dealers for service. There is one junior guy there who is regarded as their land rover tech. Probably OK for an oil and filter swap but less sure about larger or diagnostic jobs. Same problems as Broome for getting parts in, so you wait there or here -your choice.

Best of luck. Enjoy the trip

Cheers
