Hi all,
Just had a call from the dealer with some interesting news. LRA have just released details on the MY13 D4 and are now taking orders. Finally my order can proceed.
The interesting part being apart from a minor facelift the car will ship with the "new" 3lt (I think they said 185kw) engine accompanied by the 8 speed auto.
FYI

Good news that and I bet, as I said previously, it isn't that much more expensive than the previous 2.7 model.
Might be time for a D4 ...:p

Just contacted southerns in perth about this and told them I will trade my 2012 in for the 8 speed. They said I will have to wait a few years as its not on the 2013 spec list.
But then again they have told me 3 things incorrectly since I ordered and received my 2012.
Fingers crossed you get the 8 speed.

Dunno................even the runout D4's that are around at the moment are a lot more expensive than the 2.7 was.

I'm talking about RRP not run out or year end sale prices. Every model sooner or later ends up having its share of sales.

8 speed for all MY13 models. Same as the UK offering I believe: 155kw base and 180kw "SD".
Not sure if the base model (i.e. 2.7l replacement) can be ordered yet?

Hi Scott,
I placed my order and paid my deposit back in June stipulating I wanted an MY13 build but willing to accept 2012 compliance etc. The release of the MY13 was a little slower than the dealer expected but they called me on the 5th to say they had just been through a conference call with LRA and a bulk of other dealers and while they are still waiting updated broachers etc they are able to finally place my order with Land Rover.
They have promised to post me out more info once they receive it. I am looking forward to seeing the "facelift". I hope I like it.

Not sure there are any external changes? Probably getting the same internal layout as the o/s models I.e. that circular toggle dial for gears and paddles on the steering wheel. will see what our deal has to say today.

Eh?
X2. ...so does that mean D4's aren't going to come fitted with tow bars any longer? ...

Hehe - I took it a different way: "you can't tow an 8 speed..." because they never break down and need a tow! :D:D:D
Graeme
13th September 2012, 04:55 AM
Maybe it can't be towed if it breaks down, but can a 6-speed be towed anyway? I suspect not, but perhaps it can if very slowly and for a short distance.

Neither can be towed, they have to be flat bedded.

Hi Everyone
I'm new to the forum, and new (well, soon to-be) owner of a Land Rover Discovery 4.
I can confirm the MY13 definitely has the 8-speed gearbox and tweaked 3.0L V6, I've ordered mine and apparently it should arrive in Feb / Mar next year.
There is a number of little tweaks to the car, as well as a number of minor cosmetic changes including the addition of more options to personalise the look and feel of your Discovery.
I obviously can't wait to take delivery and look forward to being a fellow Land Rover driver!

The enthusiasm for the 8 speed trannie isn't as strong over in the UK, where they've had them for a while. I've been following threads on Disco4.co.uk and some drivers aren't happy campers.
I'll be happy to just have a trouble-free run out of my 6-speed in the D4, just as I did with the D3.
Cheers

Mainly a dead spot ; nothing then zoom. :lol2:
Sorted with software update, not so many complaints recently. Many think the dial is a gimick but makes it easier to rech the level control.

Pretty sure the 8 speed comes with paddles on the steering wheel as well
Which seems cool but off road can get in the way according to some

That's what worries me, an ever slipping delivery date! Of course on signing they are saying Feb but yeah, I'm sure it will slip.

The 8spd would be great on the road. You could gear it very low so it can take off at the traffic lights like a scalded cat and embarrass other performance cars (yes I know I'm a hook but can't help it). It would bring fuel economy benifit as well as more often it would be in he right gear for the load point.
I'd love to see the 4.4tdv8 in the next disco 5. I guess I won't be holding my breath.

I was told last week that all Dealers were 3 weeks away from getting all pricing and specs.
So for the people that have ordered, are you yet to spec your Discovery?
Was also told that ordering needed to be in by the 22nd of October to secure first shipment due in late January.

I am expecting the dealer to call trying to sell me some more bit and pieces when all the documentation is available but I specked mine back in June and place the order stipulating it to be a MY13 build. Reason I went the MY13 build over the 12 was the car had to be build due to my options and it was only a month or two wait to get the MY13 opposed to the MY12.
Turns out the wait was three months but I have bought myself a toy to keep myself occupied until the D4 gets here.

Surely there isn't that much of an advantage of 8 speeds over 6?
Never felt the need for more ratios in mine.
2 more gears more complex gearbox and potentially more to go wrong!
Glass half empty view :D

Hi. Are you absolutely sure that the 8 speed is coming here for MY13 models? My dealer swore black and blue that we wouldn't see these next year.
My D4 is currently back with the dealer getting a couple of small issues sorted out and they have given me an MY13 Range Rover Sport and this only has the 6 speed, would think it's a little odd that the MY13 D4 would get the 8 speed if the RRS didn't.

I spoke with some of the LRA staff at the expo in Castle Hill over the weekend. My impression from those conversations was a confirmed 8 speed trans becoming available (which trim level not specified) and a de-tuned 3.0ltr for base model D4. There's also apparently "Terrain Response 2" which I took to mean new software.
As for MY13 RRS - I doubt there's any in the country yet. I wouldn't expect them to be availble before late October or early November.

Yes, mate, I am 110% sure. I ordered one, and while the MY13 isn't 'public' yet they go through it with you when you're signing up / forking out the $$. The specs will be released at the Paris Auto Show on the 29th Sept.
It has the tweaked diesel V6 (185kw) and the 8 speed gearbox with paddles on the steering wheel and the new gear changer (is a dial instead of the gear stick see pic below) plus a heap of other little changes and extra options (eg. the 'Black Packs').

I think the Discovery has got the upgrade because it isn't due for replacement for a few years (I'd say late 2014/early 2015) where as the RRS is being replaced next year so prob less a need to invest in any substantial MY updates as all will be covered in the new car.

I believe English vehicle years are similar in concept to horse years.
I am led to believe that August/September is the the Engilsh annual vehicle registration start and end date rather than January 1st or the initial registralian date. Any vehicle actually built and coming off the production line takes takes on the MANUFACTURE YEAR from this date.
I took delivery of my D4 in November 2010 but via the VIN it is a MY11.
Australian compliance plate maybe different again. Mine is 2010 and the Australian registation thinks its a 2010.

I'm only going by what the key ring says on the car they gave me (RR SPORT SDV6 LUX 13MY), the rear of the car also looks different to the current RR Sport, it has rego of September and ~500kms on the clock.
Edit :I've checked the VIN on Topix and it's definitely a 2013. My dealer also did the back pedal and more or less said a detuned 3.0 diesel and the 8 speed gearbox should be here next year.

Had some spare time in Paris yesterday so went to the motor show. There was only one D4 on display and it was a MY12 in the std EU trim with the 8 speed that they have had for a while. All the focus was on the RR and Evoque with 4 or 5 of each on display along with a lone 90 defender. The show runs for another 10 or so days so it may be released later on.

The V8 is "mated to ZF's stronger six-speed auto." Should I be concerned when I plan to purchase an SE with the eight-speed and tow a 3T boat regularly? I don't want transmission trouble!!

8-speed standard on diesels.
2.7L discontinued.
155Kw / 520Nm is the downrated one.
Paddle shifts that move with the wheel, rotary transmission select (as per MY2012 Rangies)
New interior and exterior colours available.
Minor improvements eg sound system.
Terrain Response 2 is not available. It has had some tweaks, but the auto-sensing is restricted to Rangie III for the moment.
183Kw is the official figure. Not that 2-3kw makes any difference.
UK has had the 155/180 split ever since the D4 came out, they never had a 2.7 option nor a petrol.
I suspect the reason the petrol is 8-speed is simple return on investment. In the main market for the car eg USA it's not much of an issue. But in Europe and over here we count gear ratios and now even utes have 7 and 8 speed autos (Navara, Amarok) the wagons need to keep pace. I think at 8 speeds that's the reasonable limit, I just can't see the point of any more ratios especially given current engine technology.

Ineresting that the new jag has gone away from the rotary dial on the 8 speed.
Apparently customers prefer the conventional lever.

I looked at the Aust 2013 article and then checked the UK site for the lower-powered 3.0 diesel. It appears that even the lower-powered 3.0 comes with 19" wheels as standard. Does anyone know if the lower-powered 3.0 has the bigger brakes? They may be wonderful brakes but I suspect this means that the D4 will be justifiably pilloried here in Oz due to only low profile 19" tyres being available (Gordon's custom 18" wheels excepted).
Can anyone confirm if all 2013 D4's will have the larger brakes and 19" wheels?

The specs reflect what the dealers were telling us several weeks ago - the really interesting part will be the price for the entry model.
At the risk of offending MY13 buyers, that rotory dial really puts me off. The extra fuel economy sure would be nice. Digital radio is also well overdue - was really surprised to find ours without it.
