And the AWD (notice I did not type 4wd) Evoque doesn't disgust you? The whole vehicles concept is disgusting. What about not having a Land Rover military variant for the first time since the creation of the marque? Or the constant disdain the dealers have for anyone wanting to buy a Defender? IMHO if you removed one of the drive shafts on most modern Land Rovers most of the owners wouldn't know until the first service interval when the mechanic informs them.

Totally agree.
At the end of the day, LR like any manufacturer has to make money, so they have to make cars to pander to the masses. But they need to maintain a military variant, otherwise the core value of the brand will be lost.
Even Mercedes has the foresight to keep their G-Wagen, and as a result win lucrative military contracts.
And Front Wheel Drive is just going too far :no2:

Land Rover have been building 2WD since the 1950's, although they were rear-wheel drive.
Even the famous matchbox model "Ther Rover Service School" depicts one of the 2WD Land Rovers. Both the RN and RAF had 2WD Land Rovers for their CL fleet for on base duties.
They had tubular front ends with standard LR swivels but no diff or halfshafts.
On the transfer box the front output was blanked off.

2WD Landies are a bad idea as they dilute the brand. The Evoque itself is an excellent idea.

There are advantages and disavantages to both front wheel and rear wheel drive vechiles. My last car a Aurion from Toyota was front wheel drive and seemed to be a inhibitor for people buying it, it was one of the most economical v6 vehicles on the road.
As for the Evoque, the AWD is front wheel drive when the system understands four wheel traction is not requires, as I understand it.
The Evoque has had great reviews and I have been extremely happy with it's performance. No I don't need a military variant and perhaps that is a good thing, bring new buyers into the brand is the only way any brand will survive. I have had many people tell me they love the car and think it is one of the sleekess vehicles on the road, and I agree,
Get over it the Evoque is a Range Rover.... end of story.

The problem is that they are almost affordable to me now, and SWMBO wants to know if we can trade the L322 in on one...!!!:(
Not while my arse points to the ground!!!!

There are plenty of excuses to not get one, you need more space, they only are good for travel long distances for two, that you can manage to work around to another model. It fitted my criteria so not a problem. Another issue is top of the range, which we are close to, is a lot more then the prices in the article below...
I had to steer my other half away from getting a Grand Cherakee Jeep - after a freinds experience I am glad I did...
On the other hand perhaps the SWMBO has a good point :o:cool::p

What I don't get with my wife - well, one of the things I don't get with my wife is that she LOVES the Range Rover, even when it breaks she doesn't have an issue, "just fix it and give it back" so I don't know why she keeps going on about wanting to own one of these...
I have so far managed to keep her away from the Dealers, but I'm not sure how long I can continue to do so....
Most of your reasons don't really stack up unfortunately - it is only her daily driver, and the kids are basically grown up, so we don't need to cart them about much any more. The only one I could use is the equipment level. I'm sure a base model Evoque wouldn't do it for her compared to the Rangie...:D

Personally, a "Dakar" version with TDV6 and 9 sp HD auto box, constant AWD with CDL and "Citroen DS21"-type hydraulic-pneumatic suspension would begin to provide some interest... (time for my meds I think!)

The idea of the 2wd option is to target a market that wants a range rover for the quality and image a range rover represents but they primarily do urban driving and want the slightly better fuel economy. Nothing wrong with that in my book. You don't need a 4x4 to drive around the city.... And the principal of it being AWD instead of 4x4 is again to lower fuel consumption. Why power all 4 wheels permanently if its not needed. The haldex unit does a more than adequate job of using the rear diff when its required and letting it "free wheel" the rest of the time.

if you were even considering an Evoque, go test drive a Kia Sportage platinum, you wont buy the "LR" , ugh could not even bring myself to call one a Land Rover.

Just out of curiosity is your opinion the same in regards to the freelander?

I don't understand why you both think its so important for land rover to have a milatary version? The uk dropped it quite a while ago.....Why make a vehicle that no one wants? Beside the fact that even though they are pretty good vehicle (and I am a BIG LR fan) they just aren't that great for what the forces need. I lived in the US as a child as my dad was posted there and when I started working for land rover I asked him: "you could have a wolf, tangi or a Humvee which would you choose?"
His reply was "if I wanted to quietly stalk through the woods then the wolf, if I'm having petrol bombs thrown at me and in a built up urban area then the tangi, if I'm going offroading and I want to get through pretty much anything at a half decent speed then the Humvee" I was shocked he said that......my poor poor land rover wasn't picked as top for offroad :( but I respect his answer, he's served 37 years in the RAF regiment, has an MBE, has been nearly everywhere in the world and has driven all 3 vehicles more times than ive had hot dinners through various situations including expeditions across mexico twice. As much as it pains me to say.....LR just don't cut it any more for the military it seems for various reasons so I'm all for the focusing on the public brand side of things.

absolutely
and if LandRover stop making the Defender or a similar agricultural version with live axles, they will lose me forever. I'll never buy a d3 / d4 / rrs / freelancer / whatever the public masses want . I'd rather drive a truck

Why did you chose LR over a lets say a hilux?

All well and good if all the tracks are 3 metres wide, and there aren't any trees about...:D. Would love to see how one would go in Wombat - some places I can hardy squeeze the RRC through - the terrain is very much suited to a series Landy or similar. No way a Humvee would get anywhere... without a chainsaw...
But I see the point - just having a stir.:)

Haha love a good stir! I think when he was saying that he was thinking about flat out through across a desert or through dry river beds etc.
but then again a lot of weight and size with a Humvee one could just ram some small trees with speed and hope for the best!

Ha ha - more than likely, but there are some decent trees there. My mate took his F250 for a spin up one track. Took him two hours with a chainsaw to get back out.:D

The Evoque should always have been a 2WD car. Its clearly for the metropolis. It would make a great BMW.
Yes the real range rover sells to some pretentious people but so long as it keeps true to its roots it will hold onto its integrity as the gentlemans 4WD - a car that can truly take you any where in style. The RRS is a bit of a hooligan but it can still be considered by someone looking for a capable 4WD.
The Evoque however has done nothing to uphold RR integrity and as a result is aligning the range rover brand with putridly perfumed and conceited blingadroids. Land rover need a new brand for cars like this. I suggest 'CITY ROVER'. The Chinese would likely pronounce it wrong - but they would be so right. :wasntme:

Amen to that Brother! Unfortunately I think most of the LR line up is heading that way. The new Sport looks like a pumped up Evoque, the new FFRR looks terrible and has lost a lot of what made the RR a truly unique vehicle. The Defender as we know it is facing the chopping block - where does that leave things? The Disco, thankfully still holds true to the original idea, and judging by the amount I see on the road - they are still selling very well.

From what I've been told a lot of the Humvee drivers were very impressed with the LRPV 6x6's of a certain regiment in Afghanistan.

As an Evoque driver who has travelled 30,000km in the last 15 month, including many dirt roads and a few 4wd tracks. I know you cannot have experienced driving the vehicle and sound like a bit of a stuffed shirt who wouldn't know a good vehicle unless it pulled you out of the mud!

I reckon he thinks he's a die hard LR fan but really only likes the tractor side of the company..... But bet he wouldnt knock a puma defender?
doesnt seem to matter to most that its a transit engine and box though :D
One should love all LRs for what they are....all VERY capable vehicles. Plenty of people knock FL1s for instance....take one offroad however and they are very surprising. I've been taken offroad by the old training centre in the uk in several vehicles and they were all cracking :D
