G'day, just after a bit of advice. We'll be in Melbourne soon for a long weekend and want to know the easiest cost effective way to get from the airport to Melbourne zoo and then into the cbd in the afternoon.

thanks

Sky bus to Southern Cross Station, then train (Upfield line) or tram (route 55) to the zoo ;)

I'm with Treads on this one, and I would take the Tram personally, but that is because I love them:). The train would be a bit quicker, but not as much fun.

Not much in the way of public transport from the airport to the vicinity of the zoo, so taxi is going to be the best option unless you have loads of time. With two or more traveling it will be more expensive going by sky bus to CBD then catching the tram. Airport to Brunswick West is around $40-50 by taxi.

From the Zoo the 55 tram is more regular than the train. Train goes every 20min, tram 10-15 minutes depending on time of day. The stop is close to the station so you can pick and choose. If you take the 55 it's worth getting off on flemington rd (Childrens Hospital stop) and changing to a 59 which runs down Elizabeth St, which is a bit more central.

You can still get 2 hour metcards from ticket machines on the trams. The machines are coin only so be prepared.

Fwiw I walk past the zoo to work, and catch the 55 most days ;)

Cheers
Paul

Hey Woody,
Hope you enjoy Melbourne, it's a great city.
Change of tack here though. I'll be visiting my mum in Goodna for xmas, thinking of doing a trip out to straddie or moreton while I'm there.... you interested?

Thanks for the invite, unfortunately I'm booked up over the Christmas break, but if we throw the invite out there someone up here might be heading over that way?

FWIW - While we were in Melb, in & around the CBD, we used to use the tram all the time. However, depending on how much you'll have, you're probably better off using the taxi from the airport and then the tram from the zoo.

After taking in the great advice provided, We have decided to get a taxi from the airport to the zoo and then use the tram system to get into the cbd. Once in the cbd we should be able to walk to most places or take the free tourist shuttles.

Thanks again for the advice, it has been most valuable.

If you have the time, do the MCG tour, some great cricket history there. [Bob
