View Full Version : Roof Racks over Canvas Tops

My 101 has a canvas roof but I have a large roof rack that was bolted to the roof when it was tin. I would love to be able to use the roof rack with the canvas top. I could build an external pipe frame but would rather bolt it through the canvas to the underlying roll bars - the issue is retaining waterproofing, particularly when the rack is removed.

Does anyone know of a system that allows items to be bolted through canvas and still be waterproof?

Thanks

Garry

I did that with a vehicle with a vinyl roof. I used rubber hose cut to length as a crushable spacer around a bolt. Worked a treat.
The rack I was using was a small aluminium sheet bolted through the hood bows and vinyl roof. It carried a siren and flashing light. Not much load.

Hi Garry,
When I was in the army the
Perenties were fitted with roof racks that bolted to the roll bars / canopy bows. From memory they had a rubberised grommet sewn into the canvas that the bolt was a tight fit into and a rubber washer.

Some shock absorber rubber bushes have a small collar extension on one side which acts like a grommet thereby shrouding the pin through the hole in the retention bracket...

If you were to source some of these you could get brass eyelets of the correct diameter from a camping shop or chandlery (plus die and anvil) and hammer the eyelets into the canvas and mount the roof rack through the shock bushes /eyelets on to the hoop bars.... should be water tight... I hope:angel::wasntme:
