View Full Version : Series 2a clutch issue
the big fist

Hi all,
I have a problem with my 2a clutch. The pedal needs to be pumped to get the clutch to engage and then goes rock hard. I checked the clutch slave and it looks terribly corroded but no sign of leakage. I am guessing that it is the flexible line as it's similar to the same problem I had on my brakes. If I let the presure out by cracking the clutch master then it goes normal again.
What i want to know is how hard is it to replace the slave cylinder and flexible hose. It looks incredibly tight and I really don't want to remove the floor pan as it is very badly rusted.
Any hot tips greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Peter

Great timing to ask the question as the slave on mine crapped itself, will need to fix it this week.
Anyone have any suggestions re: not removing the floor to do this, or any other hints and tips?

have you got the access holes drilled in the firewall?
if so the hose comes out after you remove the bleed nipple through the access hole, you can then get it out from the engine side of the firewall if you lay on your back and work with your head up near the diff with appropriate sockets and ring/OE spanners.
Putting it backs the fun bit.

You can do it from underneath, but I have found it easier to remove the floor and tranny tunnel in the past rather than poking around awkwardly underneath the old girl when I replaced my slave cylinder. you can then get a nice bleeding setup as well without as much frigging around. Mind you, I had a very crappy set of tools and little patience at my disposal at the time.
I'll be doing the same soon as well, my flex hose is about to poop itself.

Ordered the cylinder and hose from Brit Parts today, should turn up tomorrow.
Looking at it yesterday I can see from underneath the 2 bolts holding the cylinder in place. I can also see the where the solid tube joins the flexible hose in the engine bay.
Are the cylinders tapped so I can just undo the 2 bolts with an extension and then let it drop down and out ? Or is there a nut on top that needs to be held ?

Someone on fleaybay (cant rermeber who) has a kit of all 3 items at the moment for $100.00. I have the same problem and will change the lot, but mine will be EZY ;) (i hope)as Ralph's engine is still in the shed.

Took me two and a half hours to change the slave with a break for dinner, slowest bit was removing the transmission tunnel. Still need to change master but that can wait till a spare weekend comes up..
