Hi,
Just washed the Engine off for its Blue Slip. Have noticed oil leaking out between the Engine and gearbox. Out of the tiny hole at the bottom.
What am I most likely looking at?
Rear main seal?
Sump leaking inside gearbox?
Any solutions for fixing?
TD5 1999.
Thanks,
Regards,
Chilly

Apart from the big time consuming repair (rear main) there could be a leak from the fuel cooler that is seeping down and by the time it gets to the bottom it could look like engine oil. After eliminating that, and say a leaking slave cylinder, there isn't much choice - you'll have to split the gearbox from engine.

Looks like engine oil....guess I'll have to split gearbox....what is the best way to go here...take the engine out or slip the gearbox back.
?
What parts should I be looking at to replace whilst doing this?
Where to get them from...UK?
Cheers,

Get yourself a set of RAVE Discs from markets - it covers defender, TD5 and R380 rebuilds. Also, an EPC (parts cat on CD) will show you what parts are involved. Then you can shop around with the part numbers - some parts can be had in Aust for similar prices to UK.
As to what else (Apart from clutch kit, release bearing and spigot bearing) - it's a case of how many K and personal mechanical preference. For example, dual mass vs aftermarket solid flywheel, gearbox & TC seals et al.
Ps - Do some research on the TD5 and see if it has things called t-seals or packing pieces. If it was a 300tdi, I'd say it was them leaking ( an easy fix by dropping the sump and playing with #5 bearing cap). I've not worked on a TD5, so I'm not sure if it has them. Also, if you do install a new rear main seal - forget the gasket and use a decent silicone ( my favorite is Dow corning 732 from CBC)
