View Full Version : To expand or consolidate?

Okay so...
Decision time.
As a few of you know, I've been eyeing off a county or two, as a bit of a fix up truck to use around the property :D
So my options are, do I buy a county (V8) and use it as something to keep me occupied and prevent me from dismantling the discovery, or do I put the money into the discovery itself?
The Disco is pretty much right where I want it to be, I'm not looking to add much more to it.
I like the county, classic defender looks, can be looked after and worked on relatively easily, and lets face it; they're just cool
It wouldn't be a registered road vehicle, at least not for a long time.
I'd be looking to keep it stock, but restore it to it's original glory as the one I'm interested in is a bit tired looking outside.
One small consideration is that mum will go ballistic if I bring another landy home, although I have a friend who I'm sure could spare the shed space, which is handy because the D2 will be spending most of my holidays in the same place, with rear bar, sliders, scrub bars, roof racks, etc being fabricated and fitted.
So, do I consolidate and spend the money on the D2 (which mum is alot less likely to notice), or do I go buy myself a project.
Either way, works out as the same amount (And yes, before you ask I can afford it, so it's not a money question)
Thoughts?
Cheers

I would forego the V8 as a farm tool for a diesel. Other than that as I understand the question is "Is another Land Rover one too many?", the answer to which is obvious.

Only issue is the diesels are a) hard to find and b) usually pretty costly.
I'd agree that I'd much prefer a rumbling 3.9 Isuzu
We don't have a large property, pretty small in fact but it would be used for collecting firewood, shooting platform and for storing and distributing sheep feed :D
EDIT If I buy another landrover and it's NOT a V8 how will Pedro take me seriously? :p

You already know the answer Muppet - you just want confirmation that your doing the right thing.:D
Which, by the way - you are - buy another one... or two... or three...:)

I figured I would toss it to the untamed waters of AULRO, just to be sure :p

if your disco is your daily driver, you need a 2nd vehicle before you can really start messing with it....

Exactly what I was thinking, makes sense right?
But will my mother hear one word of it? :p

Agreed about a second vehicle before serious mods on the D2, but a second Land Rover isn't the answer.
My D1 was my daily driver, first proper career job came along and I quickly realised turning up in a suit and a modded Land Rover with still wet carpets plastered in mud wasn't going to be tenable for long.
Toyed with the idea of a 2003/4 petrol L322 then sense prevailed and I ended up with something German, reliable, less than 3 years old and turbodiesel for similar money.
Great piece of mind knowing I can happily drive my truck into the ground on the weekend and still get to work monday morning:D

Well i'm in much the same position with multiple Landies at the moment. Money is probably slightly tighter for me LOL, so the decision has come (and this is the same decision about my XR70 when the buggy came along) to sell the old and spend money on the replacement ;)
Obviously i'm one for a project so i would buy the County if i had the space (i've given up asking mum, i want an interesting life haha), but what you have to ask is whether it will offer much more than your D2. Would it be more interesting to get an older series Landy and give yourself a bit of a challenge?!? Or even a sports car or muscle car etc. Though i can definitiely see where you are coming from with wanting a County!!!
At the end of the day (and this doesn't just apply to cars, I apply it to girls too haha) you have to go for what you want and what makes you happy, not what your mates say haha.

You've clearly never met my mother :p
She's been a school principal for 30 years, and as my friends know: I fear no man, one woman :D
I'm not looking for the D2 to become a mud monster, the D2 IS my daily drive and it needs to stay that way :p
Just looking for a spanner spinning project, and I've always wanted a defender, so why not get a defender with carpets and aircon? :D
And Will, I looked for aaaaages at series landies, and one day I'll buy the old man an SIIA and try to remake his old one, because I'm nice like that :p
County fits the bill in that it's both relatively simple to work on (compared to the D2) and practical enough to be pleasant to drive :p

Ha ! Typical teacher, never left school.... Neeeeeeds some 'defiance' in her life, whether Mum knows it or not ! (Gunna get you into DEEP trouble ... )
Forgiveness is offered eventually, but permission may never be granted.

I'd prefer to be alive to reap the rewards of my purchase :p
Might keep my eyes out, although the latest one looks okay.
I just have no idea if it runs or not :D

Thoughts ? - There's lots of more savvy folk nearer to you...
Besides, the more complex the LR the less I regard it as 'fit for Purpose'...
Daleks have the right idea... :rocket:

Pedro takes no one seriously so I wouldn't worry about it.
As for your domineering bossy school principle mother like most over powering woman chances are she's just looking for a strong enough man to respect.
Stand up and be counted and show her who is boss and if that doesn't work run away and hide till she forgives you. ...;)
cheers,

Just use the 'i dont want to wreck/de-value my daily driver' line. That way you can have a weekend toy to work on and still have the disco and she will think you are a wise person :p:p:p

Looks ok - it says it can't be tested, but it doesn't say anything about running or not. I'll be over that way tomorrow if you want me to poke my nose in and have a look? I'm no expert, but I could see if it runs, and if there are any nasty suprises you should be aware of - rust, etc...

That would be fantastic, I'd greatly appreciate it.
The question mark over if it runs or not had me a tad concerned :p
I have tried pretty much everything I can think of, but I was at a disadvantage to start with.
Dad collects guitars, so she's heard pretty much every valid excuse for buying "another one" :p
At the moment, I'm just keeping my eyes out for something that fits the bill.
I'll probably hide it, wait until it's finished and THEN tell her.
Like you say, easier to ask forgiveness than permission :p

There are realy two questions here, the first has been answered "Buy anoter landy".
The second is, Are you going to ask for Permission or are you going to ask for Foregiveness?

What you need to do is also buy her something she wants, but something that the disco can't carry. So you NEEDED the other one to organise her pressie.

Could do what we do and say you're borrowing it off a mate, we have a few motorbikes under that arrangement LOL, mum is smart, she's a doctor and it's not easy to pull the wool over her eyes, but we succeeded!! So give it a shot, after all, farmers all share equipment ;)

I'll just wait until next year, she'll be overseas for most of it.
Problem solved! :D
