How long ago was the law about signalling at roundabouts changed. A friend did the computer test today and apparently if you are going straight through a roundabout you no longer need to signal. Was this published for the general driving community to know?

Still says you must indicate when leaving a round about on the RMS site

Pretty new pics to go with it

In NSW you never had to signal going straight through, but recommended if its possible.

Pretty new pics to go with it* Except that under the Regulation " Road Rules 2008" published by the NSW Attorney General NSW Legislation site ( http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au subordleg+179+2008 (http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/maintop/view/inforce/subordleg+179+2008+cd+0+N) ) specifies: "Rule 118 Giving a left change of direction signal when leaving a roundabout
(1) If practicable, a driver driving in a roundabout must give a left change of direction signal when leaving the roundabout." Highlight added by me.
Rules 109 to Rule 119 which deal with Roundabouts, have not been amended or changed since they were first Gazetted on 13th June 2008. Ignorance of the Law is no excuse!
* Which means that the RMS are no better than the RTA and are still a law unto themselves!

Australian Road Rule 118, states - "When practicable a driver driving on a round about must give a Left lane change signal when leaving a round about"
The key is when practicable.....
On a small round about on residential street it may not be "practicable", on a large round about on a large road it would be.
But the gate is open for a deference if you got a ticket.

Dad did his HR licence in Wagga about 6 months back, the instructor frowned upon him because (and i kid you not) every single driver in Wagga signals left out of roundabouts!!! It's like a different road system. I do 'when practical' as well :)
Cheers

That's because the majority of roundabouts in Wagga Wagga are multi-lane and thus it IS considered practicable to indicate off them.
I'm fairly sure the local HWP enforce the rule too ;)

On the small, tight single lane ones in the back streets of Wagga its often totally impractical to signal when going straight through without signalling too early and thus making other drivers think you are turning left. I don't normaly see such signalling and I was driving about there for several hours this afternoon.

When my kids were doing the L plate thing and going for licence tests in the period 1995-2000, they were told it was an instant fail if on the test you did not signal exiting a roundabout.

I'm fairly sure the local HWP enforce the rule too ;)That's the problem, if the traffic officer suggests it was possible to indicate, then who are we to suggest otherwise. :(
