Hi all

I want to installan EGT & turbo boost gauges to td5.
Just wondering which product its recommended by other members who have done the same.
Thanks
Mick

mine is not a Td5 but I used VDO gauges on my Tdci - good quality

VDO from egauges in the US.

They are the same as the orignal.

Not specifically Td5, but to me it depends on what you want the gauges for.
Do you want to look at them and drive by them, or are you more interested in having those parameters monitored and to be alerted when they are outside limits.
To me a boost gauge is useful for tuning, but you don't drive by one. Maybe its useful to know if you've exceeded your max intended boost.
EGT gauge - yes you can drive by it if you're heavily fueled up, but if you've got something thats a bit more conservatively tuned, you probably just want to be alerted when it hits the limit you've chosen.

If I was putting in EGT and Boost gauges, personally I'd go for something like a Madman EMS. Saves a bit of dashboard real estate and gives you monitoring and alerting of boost/EGT as well as a couple of other parameters.

If you were just after a EGT gauge, the digital ones from Auber Instruments (Auberins.com) are good value.

yeah the madman one is good.

has a bunch of other stuff in there as well

costs a bit though but is cheaper in the long run if you want to monitor everything

if you don't though it's a waste of money

do you have a low coolant alarm?

I've got the tm2 engine watch dog which is excellent.
I have my Ecu . remapped but my turbo boost has not been touched.
Sounds likei just need an egt gauge.

AFAIK the TD5 already senses boost pressure. It is absolute, so you need to subtract ambient pressure to get guage pressure.

Can the Nanocom be used as a boost pressure sensor?

yes the Nanocom can be used to monitor boost pressure but........

If you have a boost box fitted it will modify the signal and not show the true boost being generated.

In short if a boost box is fitted you will need an independent boost gauge.

And really if you want to run at any sort of increased boost particularly if a remap is involved IMHO a boost box is a must.
More boost = less black smoke and cooler EGT.

Cheers,
Paul.

Ive got an AUBER INSTUMENTS egt and its great- mates all ended up buying the same, approx $120 delivered from the states, its digital and very accurate, my boost guage[and oil pressure/oil temp /volts] are all vdo

Wonder how high do the EGT need to be to make the manifolds glow, or is this caused on the dyno by lack of airflow. looks to be pyro sensors all over this

AMG 5.5-Liter V8 Biturbo on Test Bench - YouTube

edit, I just found this

400 Red heat, visible in the dark
474 Red heat, visible in the twilight
525 Red heat, visible in the daylight
581 Red heat, visible in the sunlight
700 Dark red
800 Dull cherry-red
900 Cherry-red
1000 Bright cherry-red
1100 Orange-red

C= Centigrade

Wow - that Merc engine must be around 1100 C,
I dont like going over 700, meybe I'm being a little conservative ??

What should the egt temperature be for a td5 anyway?

Depends on the map used.

When I'm towing the van, I drive by my boost gauge and EGT. Thru gears, I'll give her the berries and pull 20psi boost and EGT's respond accordingly, but, when cruising, I drive by the boost, when in 5th, I try not to exceed 15 pound and if I need too, I'll drop back a gear or 3. This keeps my EGTs under control and not laboring the 5th cog and results in a 90 to 100 km/h speed depending on weather conditions. Seems to work for me. The van is 23ft and 2300kgs. My boost gauge is an Autometer and EGT is a digital Cruzpro.

your EGT temp is guided by the total heat soak capability of the following

1. The piston crown
2. the head
3. the cooling system
4. the lube system

you can only run the engine up to the weakest components ability to deal with heat.

For stock ally pistons with basic splash oil cooling that pretty much sets your max sustained EGT at 650 degrees (pre turbo EGT)

Which model have you got?
They have one that does both egt & boost.

I had one of Ian's Thermoguard units in my Nissan Patrol ute for a few years. Excellent piece of quality gear, but compared to some of the units around now it is lacking in features. I must check the link out because if he's added to the features, like having alarming functions, I'd consider buying another - if the Puma has some real-estate on the dash out of direct sunlight.

-the basic one with the k type sensor, on ebay for $102 + $18[usa] postage, i run an analogue vdo psi 0-30 guage for boost

That sounds like the same one.
I'm thinking about getting one of their tachos at the same time.
Has anyone got one of them fitted?
Very reasonable price compared to analogue gauge.
