Replace Transmission XYZ Switch?

Curious if anyone has attempted the XYZ Switch replacement mentioned at Transmission Selector Switch Diagnosis & Repair (http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/drivetrain/transelector.html) and if there are any gotchas?

I'm not going to try to repair the old one. Will just a source a new one from somewhere I hope... suggestions appreciated.

Mine has been a bit odd since I replaced the HP22 with a HP24 a couple of years ago.

The light on the selector sometimes shows R before it engages, and it almost never shows 1 when engaged. It has recently been showing R when in Neutral... I could live with that except for blinding the drivers behind me with my LED reverse lamp(s) if stopped in traffic and selecting N :p

I have adjusted the cable/cam several times with not much joy, so am pretty sure it is the XYZ switch itself.

I'm probably no help paul, just offering sympathy as my old green P38 did this. I was going to adjust the little cam but drowned it first!

Have a look on the D2 forum - I think there are some hints there about rebuilds, etc.

Thanks Pete. After speaking with Andy (Andrew e) yesterday, he reckons they are easy to rebuild/clean as his Dad (Bundalene) regularly does this to his D2's.

Will see how brave I feel on the weekend.

Keithy - funny you say that. My old 95 HSE was doing it in the days/weeks before it drowned too.

used this tutorial to clean up the old xyz switch http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-tutorials/130106-rebuild-d2-zf-selector-switch-uhb100190.html (thanks Michael2) and was pleasantly surprised to find no signs of water in there.
In addition to the adjustment on the cable, the body of the switch has a small amount of rotation allowed by elongated holes where the bolts go. By adjusting the rotation slightly, I am now able to select 1 and all gears appear to work correctly :D
