Gday everyone,
I am the extremely happy and proud new owner of a 1963 88" GS land rover. It seems to be in great condition and is a great driver. It needs a bit of work as usual, but i think i have more than enough parts in my ever growing collection to sort it out.
I am unsure about how original it all is, I had difficulty finding any REMLR info on it. It was purchased from Morgan in SA and has been driven around on historic rego for years now.
It has lots of extra's compared to my 1969 109" GS, including a spotlight on the drivers side, two red centred spotlights on the bullbar, a vice, and a fair few extra dials on the inside. It also has extra rope tie points on the bonnett as well.
Any ideas on its history/military use and some info on the extra additions would be great. I would love to restore it back to original specs if possible.
Thanks, Will.

Hi, if you post this info on the REMLR forum you will get some help as well.
Good looking rig.
spot lights aren't original, side mirrors not original, pintle hook on front goes to the back, take off vice, checker plate on bumperettes and rear spare and outside will be original, but you will need TAC plates and bridge plate.
All the extra guages on the dash will be add-ons as well, but if they serve a purpose I'd leave them on.
Cheers

Thanks for the help with the ARN, I must have looked straight past it on the REMLR database.
I have a 1964 88" as well that has been stripped of almost everthing military and has no engine. The firewall is almost 100% perfect but painted cream. After finding some rust high up in the floor pan of the 1963 88" i am thinking of doing a firewall swap.
The only difference between the two firewalls i can see is that the wiper motor is in the dash on the 64, and individually through the windscreen on 63. Which is the correct military version? And is the firewall from the 64 compatible with the 63?
Thanks for any help.
The rolling chassis on the 1964 88" is very good and i will be looking to move it on very soon if anybody knows someone interested.

Can you show a pic of that?? In dash wiper motors were series III's or very late series IIa's, without a pic it would seem to be a series III or late series IIa firewall:( which means would not be a '64:(

Hi there, thats interesting info. The nomenclature plate says this is a 1964 88"GS, but i guess the plate could have been swapped over. I am having trouble adding a photo of the fire wall in the 64, but i can say it is pretty much the same as my 69 109". It would be great to use it if i could in the 1963 as it would save me lots on rust repair :(.......
Trying to match up and build a correct military vehicle is harder than it looks! Even when you think you have bought one that is close:confused:
I guess i could learn to live with a bit of rust and just enjoy driving it, it is almost 50 after all.

My guess is that if the firewall is so good then it has been swapped over, and of course the plates as well. A picture will determine around what year it is:)
Our 'charles' '68 109 2a GS, has the wiper motor in the dash, I think '68 is when they changed over;)

The photo of the firewall i have been trying to attach is in a previous thread i put up a while ago when i bought the 1964 88" GS! And apparently you cant attach it twice.....
I copied a shortcut, dont know if it would work.
I will take a new photo tonight and attach it later. Thanks very much for your help, it makes understanding these cars just that little bit easier. All three 2A's I have bought at this stage seem to be different! Especially the 1963.

That pic doesn't look to me like a military firewall:( Does't seem to have had a blackout light or switch, which should be on the left of the instrument panel, and I can't see a hand throttle, which should be underneath and it definitely is not a 1964:( :(

Thanks for having a look, much appreciated. Its a bit dispaointing would have been a great swapover, never mind. Will have to look at repairing the rust instead. Might even plate over it.....
Does anybody know of someone in the adelaide hills that would be interested in having a look at my 109" and 88" landrovers to help me workout what is compatible on the 1963 88"?

It can be very disapointing when you buy a vehicle and told not all the truth about it:(
You do know where the new REMLR forum is??
If not here is the link.. Registry of Ex Military Land Rovers - Index (http://remlr.com/forum/)

Why disappointing you have a firewall in good condition , the origional may have been rusty & someone has had the nouse to put a good replacement firewall in instead of just scrapping the vehicle . If the army damaged a vehicle dont you think they would have replaced parts. Thats the great thing about series Landies parts compatability & interchangability. If your 88 & 109 are 2A's then use any bits you want ,a 2 you can use most bits , man a coat of olive drab & who's going to know. If I put some civvy 2A doors on my 109 GS then throw a coat of paint on em does that make it any less origional. Just go for it & ENJOY. :D
