Gday just wondering if a D1 93 V8 auto transfer case is the same or will fit a 2001 D2 TD5 auto. I think I may know the answer but looking for your expertise confirmation if I can please, are they different?
Thanks Steve

Straight swap.
just blank the speedo fitting, swap the drive flanges and the hand brake.

Many thanks Dave, my appologies I only just saw your post in another D2 thread.
D1, would have CDL yes?. Just to be clear there is no modification needed just swapping a couple of things over?
Thanks Steve

on the ones ive done no mods other than the swap overs.
The d2 tcase is better due to better gearsets inside but as for getting drive to the wheels both interchange and get the job done (d1 goes to d2 easily but you need to swap out the rear bearing casing to get the speedo drive system to go d2 into d1)

As above with the output flanges, handbrake and speedo drive, plus the D1 transfer case front output housing won't have the hi/lo switch that is fitted to the D2 housing.

No worries thanks very much to you both for info. I might be able to get a D1 T/C cheap around $100, I was wondering if it would fit.
In your opinion should I fit a D1 one, or do you reckon I'm better off to actually wait and source a D2 one.
Thanks again

I've done 2 to d1s that I havent been made aware of being swapped back.
I have a 3rd thats had a temp d1 case installed and is getting a rebuilt D2 case put back in.
The D2 case has finer mesh gears in it to deal with the extra power available from the later engines BUT theres more than a few D1s running D1 cases with upped engine power.
My money says
If you drive using all the available power a lot of the time or you tow then you are better off refitting a later model Tcase. If you drive conservatively then you can get away with the earlier Tcases but should be aware that if you go second hand and its not of good condition then you are creating a false economy.
Tpyically I have a spare of the primary driveline component in "workable" condition that I can slide in place to tide me over untill I can get the original rebuilt or replaced. The Tcase Swap I have coming up will be to return my temp lt230. If you decide that you want to rebuild your LT230 then you're welcome to borrow my spare.

Thanks Dave I'm not a huge leadfoot but I do tow a 22ft van at around 2t so yeah maybe I'm best to source a D2 one then as I dont want to risk it being unreliable or maybe not up to the task. My transfer does'nt have the diff lock and I had an oil leak fixed just recently and its leaking again:(. I thought if I could get a CDL one then when they pull it back out put the CDL one in instead.
Thanks very much for the offer the loan of yours, much appreciated. Will keep in mind.
Cheers

I maybe wrong but couldn't you use the CDL mechanism from the D1 box and fit it into the D2 box. I thought this is how people convert the D2 boxes to have CDL.

Are you completely sure of this? My understanding that the different gear design is only to reduce gear noise. Unless I'm really lost, smaller gear teeth make a weaker gear , not a stronger one.....

for spur gears you would be correct, for helical cut gears it gives you more contact patches, Same basic theory of fine pitch threads giving better hold than coarse pitch threads.
The drawback of the finer tooth gears is their tolerance for wear and damage is a lot lower.

Turns out it was'nt the TC leaking again it is a small leak from the rear of the trans which hopefully will be done when I get it serviced in a couple of weeks.Still at some stage soon want to do the CDL install. Thanks to all for replies gives me more options,
appreciate it

If you fit the D1 transfer case to the D2, does it throw faults because it doesn't have the range switch in it, and which throttle map do you end up getting?

Sharkee. If I read you correctly you are putting in the D1 Tcase for the CDL. If so all D2's have the CDL they just did not fit the lever and linkages. They thought the electronic gizmo's would be good enough. People complained so they put them back after a year or so. There are a number of after market addons to activate it if you look on the web. The fine gears were to quieten the Tcase and are designated by a Q after LT230.

Not quite right Ackie. The early D2 had the internals fitted but for some time in 2001 they removed them during manufacturing. Did not return until the D2a came out. Sharkee's one does not have the internals.
